It started ,,YAHOO,, it ran for 20 -30 seconds and stalled. I did not touch gas or choke. That was ok.. Then I tried to start and the starter crapped out. I pulled it to bench test, and it runs at 1/4 or 1/2 speed or not at all ??? HUH ???

Have it checked by a machine at your friendly auto Zone or such.

yes jack that is the thing to do, but at 36 yrs old , and the original starter, They will tell me rebuild or get a new one. So I will check with the local guy for price or go to BPNorthwest. BP will cost me 115 approx including shipping. If the local guy can do better then wonderful. I just wonder, last week I freed up the starter gear, and did maybe the PB buster oil actually do something inside the starter.?? I did try to dry it off while cleaning it but how much would it take to cause a no turn problem.? Or did just turning and turning and turning yesterday cook something inside??

Sure could have cooked it, and the balaster could have gotten on the brushes as well I supose.

A new one would certinaly not be a bad idea.

The brush and stud assembly are a bit delicate. You MUST have a wrench on the inner nut, then use another to tighten the outer nut that retains the cable. If the stud turns it very likely will break the aluminum strap that connects to the brushes. You may have turned the stud in replacing and removing the starter. This is especially a problem on the starters with the steel cover over the brush area. BTDT Peter

Ok peter is this repairable by me or do I get it repaired or just buy a new starter...

Woodie, It is a pretty simple repair. You buy a brush set. You DO need to ID the starter. Best is with the number on the housing. Like 25022, or 25079, or 25149. They, and other numbers, all interchange as assemblies, but the brushes are specific to 2 different styles. The earlier starters had that cover band, and the brushes ran on the diameter of the commutator. The later had triangular brushes that ran against the end of the commutator.
Of course, a well rebuilt starter will have a warranty. Brushes will be maybe 10 bucks. Peter

well I found a local supplier in town, I can get a new starter for $125 cdn or about $110US. No shipping and warrantied. And I can get it today. That means in the car tomorrow night. Get it started minor adjustmentto the carbs, and start the final sand before primer and paint. WOHOO!! (yeah right, what else will climb up from the bowels of the Midget to bite me? See my next post wednesday to tell you all.)
SO far though this board has saved me lots of time and head scratching. Thanks !!

oh ya, do i win a prize for getting the correct diagnosis?!

Some excuses for when that happens:

"It's CAMMED!"

"These engines are powerful, it smooths right out at 5K RPM."

"Those plugs are originals!"
