ZZimmy I woke up with that exact thought. I read in the manual 1,3,4,2. I think I haveit. But to be sure 1 is closest to the firewall and 4 is next to the rad. Now for the distribtor going clockwise What is the correct position??
I copied what was there, but it may not have been right.

This might be your problem! No. 1 is at the front (radiator) of the engine and no. 4 is at the back (firewall).

ok I will re adjust, BUT which distributor position is number 1??

But anyone can be #1 they have to go in order from 1 then and 1 must be when front piston is at TDC. Did that make sense?

Dist. rotor turns ccw, correct?

Yes

I found a reference that says the dist position at 1 oclock (upper right and closest to the rad) is where plug for nos 1 goes. that means it looks like this

cylinders 4 3 2 1 RAD

3 1
c
4 2

And that is the way I have always done it.

That looks right to me.

Another thought. About a year ago, I had a starting problem with my 948. After many posts, I became know as "180 out". Make sure you are working with #1 at TDC, not #4,
