Firewall Heat Shield Pattern Needed

This week I will finish up some under-the-bonnet stuff. My car does not have the firewall heatshield , the one directly behind the rocker cover. I think it is secured by three screws and large washers, and has notches for wires etc. so it is not simply rectangular.

I would like to make one out of some appropriate material, but I need a pattern. So here is a request and idea. If someone has one of these laying about the garage, could you be so kind as to trace its outline on paper and FAX the outline to me? This seems the easiest way to get the dimensions fairly close.

My fax is 831-477-0857

Thanks a million!

Thanks a million! I didn't expect such a fine engineering sytle drawing, but wow! This gives me all the data I need.

My plan is to use some suitable look-alike material to the original, but back it with a layer of that bubble/foil insulation like I used on the inside of the foot wells.

Today I am reinforcing the scuttle bulkhead with a piece of steel. I will cut it to the right size and shape and plug weld it into place on the cockpit side. I suspect the weakest part of the original construction in that area is the joint between the top of the bulkhead and the top piece to which the parcel shelf is attached over the transmission. Looks like a very open seam that should be better attached.

Here goes...
Thanks.

Brian,

The scuttle shake mod. that I have heard of consists of welding in 1/2" angle iron to the vertical and horizontal junctions of the opening on the engine side. https://www.team.net/www/healey/tech/big_hly/body/scuttle.html

There is a website with pictures of this mod but I can't find it in my links right now.

FWIW, I have my frame down to bare metal and could do the scuttle shake mod if I wanted to but will probably not bother doing anything more than adding a few welds to stiffen the area. After going through the suspension, steering, hubs, wheels and tires the scuttle shake is gone.

Cheers,
John
