In my youth in western PA we called 'em lightning bugs too. Would collect 'em in Mason jars as well. Another phenom to us as young kids were the cicadas singing and their shells on all the trees around the place.

The cicadas always tell us that August is here and fall is not far behind. Katydids and crickets too.
