The Air Force has been trying to kill off the A-10 for 20 years. Back in the 90s, there was an Air Force General (maybe it was Horner) who suggested transferring A-10 operations to the Army, and in exchange the Air Force would take over the Patriot Missile System. It made perfect sense, but the Army didn't want to give up their missile defense capability.

So far, the F-35 is proving to be a real lemon and a very expensive one at that. When the U.S. got involved in Vietnam, the Air Force thought its jets could handle the close air support mission. They had to turn to the Navy and acquire their Skyraiders for the close support role. By dumping the A-10, the Air Force is showing they didn't learn from history.

They want to scrap the best CAS weapons platform in inventory. I was in Vermont for the first multi-round test firing of the GAU-8A... formidable! And the airframe of the A-10 is just about indestructible. Makes little sense to discard them.

I remember Zumwalt "sorting" it out way back.

I remember "Z-GRAMS"!!

Used to see plenty Warthogs back in Shreveport. England AFB in Alexandria was just down the road, and I believe there were a bunch headquartered there.

A10's regularly fly over our house (in pairs) on their way to target practice at a military range just a few miles from us. The burping sounds of that GE machine gun is awesome. Would hate to see them mothballed/discontinued.

A two-flight came into our base here last weekend. They're not too common down here, I was surprised to see 'em.

I referred to it not as "burping" but rather as a giant noise coming from the other end... :smirk

That photo with the Beetle kinda 'splains it all.
