FIRE RAINBOW

THIS IS A FIRE RAINBOW - THE RAREST OF ALL NATURALLY OCCURRING ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA.

THE PICTURE WAS CAPTURED ON THE IDAHO/WASHINGTON BORDER. THE EVENT LASTED ABOUT 1 HOUR

CLOUDS HAVE TO BE CIRRUS, AT LEAST 20K FEET IN THE AIR, WITH JUST THE
RIGHT AMOUNT OF ICE CRYSTALS AND THE SUN HAS TO HIT THE CLOUDS AT PRECISELY 58 DEGREES.

That's wild looking. Did you take it?

Psychedelic.....................

If it's the rarest natural optical phenomenon then I need to start playing the lottery. I see them on a somewhat regular basis.

Maybe its the Psychedelics. ;-)

Car exhaust more likely! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif I've seen a couple really nice glories as well, with the plane in the middle. Never have a camera handy though! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

I see glories all the time, and the fire rainbow on occasion. Clouds do weird things. We saw this formation a couple of years ago - it went across the state just like this, some areas more wave-like than others. About 10 miles north there was another one that had sharp peaks. Hadn't seen anything like it since.

No, I didnt take the pic, It was sent to me by a friend. I had never seen anything like it.

That is very neat!! The only other comparable atmospheric effect I have seen is the Aurora borealis (also a breath-taking light show!!) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

We get "sunbursts" here a lot where you can see the rainbow effect in the cloud to either side of the sun, but I've never seen one qiute like that pic.
We were treated to an awsome Aurora borealis show a few years back during that massive solar flare. I've never seen anything like that. the whole sky was glowing and waving in different colors. It's rare to see the Aurora here in southern NY.
