fire extinguisher

I'm thinking of trading my standard car's fire extinguisher for halon type. Why are they so expensive? I also heard they have become illegal? Can they be easily recharged? Can a standard extinguisher be refilled with halon? What do you all use?

Halon is no longer produced so as the supply dwindles, the price goes up. Still legal in the US but I believe it's illegal or severely limited in OZ and Europe. They can be recharged. I think you need an original Halon to recharge with Halon. I plan to pick up a Halon unit someday - but I plan to do lots of things someday.

Genuine Halon 1211 is no longer produced. Smaller extinguishers run about $150 or so filled from the existing supply.

"Halotron" is a similar clean agent, legal, but doesn't work as well as the real stuff. Halon leaves no residue.

I have several Halon extinguishers, the largest is 18lbs of Halon. They last pretty much indefinitely if you watch the gauge and flip it upside down a couple of times a year to "wet" the seal. That's the advice the fire service inspector guy told me anyway.

The residue left behind after using an extinguisher is key. The powder substance used in Class ABC extinguishers is literally a corrosion accelerator: that stuff will cause rust like crazy and it's very difficult to remove once it's sprayed on a metal surface.

Avoid the Class ABC extinguishers if you can. Halotron is much better and won't cause corrosion and leaves very little residue.
