Still will have to replace expensive body panels...IMO, its better to insure it, let it go, & buy another to do better than the one that burned...but, JMO!

IMHO an extinguisher could save the day and minimize the damage, that's why I carry one!!!
 
I don't car if the car burns. But MY panels are not replaceable. I figure it's possible for a flame to catch and spread quicker than I can get the car to the side of the road. In that case, I would like to keep as much skin as possible.

Skin grafts suck.
 
Morris - my only fire started with smoke coming out the AC vents (of course it was the AC system on fire)...next the paint started bubbling out in front of the windshield on the cowl....when I opened the hood - WHOOSH!! (But, I knew that would happen if I opened the hood.)....there was plenty of time in my instance to get out of the car & get our luggage out of the trunk.
 
That's the problem with newer cars...You are too isolated from what is going on with the car in a modern cabin till the last seconds before major meltdown!!! IMHO in an LBC you would have a much earlier warning that something was amiss...smell, noise, vibration, heat, etc.

Tony, I wouldn't worry about in a Merc, either. Theres a lot of material between the driver and the fire in a Merc. I am pretty sure you can take a howitzer round in a Merc without more than scrapes and bruise.

The fuel in my Midget is pressurized at 3 bar, so I may be (justifiably) a little more fire shy than you guys.
