Wedge Finally got the TR7 out

The TR7 was lagging around in the no-drive-zone of my garage since I got it. Then it spent a couple weeks down at my buddy's shop...when he had no time to fix the exhaust leak, I attempted to fix it myself again. Used different bolts and got the manifold back on and torqued correctly (one of the holes totally stripped out.)

Even though I'm still getting a backfire under acceleration, I've been driving the TR7 for the last few days in the great weather. It's quite a fun little car. Very comfortable.

I'll probably make one last shot at re-tuning the bypass valves. At any RPMs, letting off the gas quickly makes it pop all the way through the exhaust. If I let off the gas slowly -- even at high RPMs, no pop...which leads me to believe it's not an exhaust leak, and something more carb or smog pump related.

It's funny though, the thing handles so well, you really have to work to get the tail out...then it tucks right back in with a little opposite lock. I must look insane pushing this car around here like I do!

My '80 Spider backfires too when I let up under hard acceleration. Driving to work in the morning, I must enter a 55 mph 2 lane road just after a bend. Once you commit to the turn, you need to peer in the mirror to see what's come up on your tail. That's the best time to reach 5,000 rpm on each shift. the 4 cylinder accerlerates just fine at those speeds. You can hear the backfire and a woman following me once said you can see a bit of flame, too. I have unburnt fuel but clean plugs and good gas mileage - can't be too rich.

Glad your's is out and about. The car handles very well, better since I pumped up the front tires higher than the recommended pressure in the manual. It really lessens the understeer.

You guys might want to try a compression and leak rate test to see if things are closing properly, like valves not having the proper clearances. This will tell you if you have a burned exhaust valve, or if the valves are a bit out of time which is something in a TR7 you do not want.
