Finally cracked open the shoeboxes of old slides..

Got a cheapish slide scanner from the old man for xmas and I finally had a couple of hours to myself today so I broke open the boxes of slides.

Here's a couple of the old man and his 52 TD that I stumbled across today:

That's neat, Jim! I don't have enough pix of my Old Fella.

What scanner'd ya get?

Cool pic, car & house.

Pacific Image PrimeFilm 3600u. Not bad for the price - I can get 16megapixels optical - These were scanned at about a third of that and I'm getting close to a setting with the curves and whatnot to be happy with the scans without a major amount of tweaking. Still not happy enough with the "artsy" stuff that I'd like to make enlargements from but for snapshots it is starting to kick butt. Considering it was about 200 bucks and the Nikon CoolScans are pushing $1000 I'll be happy.

Thanks - I still haven't found any shots of the house yet - it was a 3 story + basement built in 1906 by the local "Department Store Kingpin" and was a fun place to live. Between helping fix the MG's and helping fix an 80 year old house I got a lot of "jack of all trades" training in my formative years.

Now I'm starting to realize what a "photo snob" I was back then. I could care less about all the crappy landscapes I took thinking I was the next Ansel Adams and wishing I would have taken more snapshots documenting those little things you forget about.

Fortunately I've changed my snobby ways now that I've got the kids and I have figured out that there is a place for both documenting AND art in my life.

We have a 3600 too. Just fine for our purposes. I like that you can run strips thru it too.

As for the "documentation" thing, yeah, I have a LOT of shots of family stuff, the rest. But for some reason not too many of Da. It wasn't on purpose or that he was camera shy... I guess I just never thought he'd be going away back then.

I mostly ascribed to the philosophy: "If it moves, shoot it. If it's standin' still shoot it twice."

Another thing that hit me is that I was back by the old homestead a couple of years ago and thought how scruffy the neighborhood had become.

Now looking at these slides I think maybe it was just scruffy all along... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

home... but scruffy nonetheless /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

it's been 25 years and still nobody has fixed that roof on the carriage house. (and yes... we called it the carriage house - don't you dare call it a garage) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Oh, so you come from 'breeding' now, huh? *sheesh*

Izzat where ya kept th' Rolls? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Dapper chap, your Dad! Great photo of your Dad and his shiny MG, Jim! Isn't it great to discover such old family photos!! Brings lots of nostalgia and memories.

I recently obtained old photos of my grandfather, taken in the 1930s. My great Aunt stored them in a cedar chest, and when she died last year she left them to me. About 120 photos, all in decent condition. Fascinating!

Wish I had more.

Thanks for posting!

LOL

i'd think one look at the top pic with all the weeds around the back porch, the butt-arse ugly blue paint, and the gutters falling off said "carriage house" would answer that question rather quickly!

I believe coming from 'in-breeding' would be a more correct assesment.

I've carried my share of Jello-molds with raisins and carrots to family pot-lucks /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Anyone from Illinois will confirm that anything south of Decatur is pretty much "Kentucky-Lite"

And no Rolls... but we could keep the TD the TR3 AND an old Crown pop-up camper in there.

Warning... Scanning old slides is very addictive /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

My late dad had a fabulous collection of old slides from 1957/61 shot on Kodachrome slide film, nothing British car relatd but still some great stuff... I only found them after he passed away, so I really know nothing about them...

My dad? He was very camera shy, much like his son /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif I have about 400 slides from that time period, and only two have him in the photo

Yup Nial, I did enjoy your old photos...

Actually on Flickr there is a huge number of vintage photos, some people have accounts where they only post vintage photos, either old family photos or found ones they have acquired, I collect old photos through dealers as well as some of the old family ones like above and have many of the old family photos and found photos posted on my account

For automotive vintage stuff (and a good browse) I started this Flickr group for vintage automotive photos... https://www.flickr.com/groups/periodpictures_cars/ About 2,800 photos at present and always more being added...

And how about 33,000 vintage photos of all kinds... https://www.flickr.com/groups/old_photos/

Here's one vintage photo posted by one of my contacts, who also happens to work for one of the British classic car magazines, some photo that showed up at their office...

I have some of my grandparents' photo albums, and when my neighbor became President of Muhlenberg College, I showed him the one from 1914 when Grandpa was a student there. I ended up donated a set of copies to the college, as he said thee were interior photos of the chem labs and such from that period that he had never seen. I loved the photos of them doing nature hikes in their wool suits. I need to restore some of his movies of his cross country road trips from the 1930's.

yup... definitely addictive. Been hoarding stuff since I got the bug in 7th grade. The old man's mom gave me all the stuff she had around the house and I have ended up with about 60 glass negatives that are 4x7" in size that my grandpa took when he was in his teens - don't know what happened to the camera. They are real bullet-stoppers (over-exposed) and i've got contact prints of them- some very neat old cars in there and pictures of the ice-cream shop / diner that my grandpa ran from right after WWII until the end of the 50's... "Sneddon's Confectionery" on the main drag of Marion Illinois. I stuck some in a Bessler 4x5 enlarger with a cobbled-up neg holder I built and to make a 5x7 the exposure on these negs ran about 3 minutes each.

Mom thought I'd lost my mind when I started bidding on a box of old photo albums and 8x10's at an auction in Belleville - I paid 25 bucks for the set when I was 13. Got some amazing 8x10s of pilots in training for WWI posing in front of Curtis Jennys.

One of these days.... scanning will occur... one of these days....

I've personally got a collection of at least 200 vintage photo, all ones I've acquired.

I also love history, so I think collecting old photos goes hand in hand with a love of history.
