Finally applied for collector car ins. w. Hagarty

Their whole online process of applying was very nice and easy, I was even able to submit documents digitally for them. Hopefully I receive approval and get to send them a check soon. Their quote to cover both my TR6 and TR7 with zero deductible was far less than I am paying for just the TR7 with Liberty Mutual currently.

The one concern that I do have is the comprehensive claim that I had to make with Liberty Mutual in Feb when the carport came down and smashed out the dash and windscreen on the wedge. It's the only claim i've ever made on any insurance in my whole life (and heck, the 'pay out' of the claim was less than my annual policy cost for the wedge too) but I wonder if Hagerty will take that as a reason to deny coverage.

It was the liberty mutual claims adjuster who came out who basically told me "i dont know why we're even covering this car, we cant get numbers on anything for it, you should be with a collector car insurance company" that really prompted me to move (albeit slowly) on this.

I talked around and they seemed like the easiest company to deal with, so here's crossing my fingers.
 
I would think that a comp claim would in itself not affect your acceptance or rate as it would not be viewed as an 'at fault' claim.

However, it is possible they will be put off by the use of the car port. Generally collector coverages I've seen are expecting the subject cars to be kept in locked garages.
 
The cars are kept in my locked garage. The wedge was in the carport for the winter (where my pickup usually went, and the truck went uncovered) because I needed the extra space in the garage for the frame restoration. The 7 and the 6 are both kept in my locked garage under all normal conditions.

A requirement to even apply for the insurance is that the vehicles are kept in a locked and enclosed facility.
 
The carport caught my eye as well. All of the classic carriers I am aware of require that the car be stored in a locked garage when not in use.
 
I recently received a quote from Hagerty and they were really easy to deal with, however when you get to the fine print they expect the car will only be driven to car shows and kept in a locked garage. They frown on any other use. People have not had problems filing claims, however check your contract language carefully to make sure you fall within their narrow intended use standards.

That's not accurate. I was hit in the front end on a beautiful summer day taking my wife to Newport for lunch and then a late afternoon cruise. Hagerty had an adjuster to the body shop within 48 hours and I had all of the money for the complete repair within 7 working days. They paid for a complete paint job, rather than have a mismatch of texture between the front end and the rest of the car.

And my price is half of what it was with my commercial carrier for three times the coverage. I actually have my TR6 and my TR8 insured for less than what the TR6 used to cost me.

Hagerty is up here in Traverse City, MI. They're good people. They have a great car show every summer in their back yard. They like collector cars.
 
+2 (or 3 or whatever the count is) on Hagerty being a good choice. They are good folks, and provide good no BS coverage.
 
I have not had to file a claim with Hagerty but like the others above, I chose them specifically because of their allowed limited pleasure use of the vehicle. Several others insurers did specifically exclude all use that was not associated with shows and classic car events. Shows are not why I own my classic cars.
 
I was told somewhere along the line, might have been the agent, that you can drive up to 2500 miles annually without an issue on coverage. I too have my police through them.
 
The agent I deal with is an agent for Hagarty as well as the company I have for my other cars. When I said that I wanted to consider Hagarty, he said that it is a very good company, but that they are very strict on the use of the car: mainly to car shows, to the shop, and very little else, and the car must be garaged if it is registered as an "antique car" and has antique plates.

My agent specifically said that my company allows occasional pleasure driving, and as for value my insurance company asked for an appraisal from a professional appraiser and accepted it. I also had to certify that I had other vehicles for regular transportation and do not use the Triumph for daily use.
 
Speaking of off topic, though I have had three TR-8's over the years I learned something new yesterday...if you are doing 70 with the top down and get caught in a rain shower, the airflow off the windshield will actually carry the rain over your head to the back of the car, laeving us dry :smile:

Either he is not familiar with their policy or the Hagerty website is incorrect.

Personally, I use Condon & Skelly -- similar restrictions on use (allow some pleasure driving, no specific mileage limit). I have no claims experience with them but know others who have and they were treated very fairly.

Don't know. All I know is that the agent has sold many Hagerty policies to people who have requested them, but said that I would have fewer restrictions on pleasure driving if I stuck with my present policy. My company has a discounted price for "antique cars" that is reasonable.

When I looked into insurance, I asked if I should purchase a policy from Hagerty. He asked me what kind of driving I intended to do, and I said that all I had in mind was occasional pleasure driving, and not much interest in car shows, parades, or other car events. That's when he advised me to add the Triumph to my present auto policy.

With my company, occasional pleasure driving is accepted, but, as I said, car must be in a garage and there is a restriction of 4000 miles @ year. I had to submit many photos of the car and a certified appraisal. In addition, I cannot drive more than 250 miles from home.

Most of the people I know hereabouts who have antique cars use Hagerty and are very pleased with the company, but they have several cars, drive their cars very little, and mostly to shows or other car events.

I don't know if restrictions vary state-by-state because state DMV regulations vary state-by-state (I doubt it, but don't know)
 
A Hagerty rep called me this afternoon to discuss the claim that I made, and I explained exactly the situation, how the TR7 was in the carport temporarily while I was doing the restoration on the frame of the TR6, which required the whole garage (tr6 body, next to original tr6 frame, next to doner frame being restored) while the welding and repair work was done, and how the record snowfall we had collapsed the support beam from my carport through the windshield and dash, but that both cars are back in the garage now, and they were all right with it.

My application is now approved, and I'll be saving almost 900$ a year on my auto insurance with everything combined. They were very pleasant to deal with over the phone, and the ability to print all my documents online is great too. Getting access to any of my policies and papers from Liberty Mutual is always a hassle.

I told them that last year I drove the TR6 2000 miles, and the wedge 1000 miles, and they were perfectly fine with that. I also told them my estimate is within 6 to 12 months that my TR6 restoration should be done... Now lets see if I can stick to that number! I certainly hope so.
