Final cleaning before paint.

Sorry if this has been discussed, I couldn't find it in the files.
What is best to remove traces of oil or silicone, methyl hydrate, mineral spirits (what is that?), Varsol, lacquer thinners?

whatever paint system you are going to be using on the car should have its own prep solution. It may be more expensive that lacquer thinners and the like but it is designed to work with your paint. better to be safe than sorry with the cost of some of the modern paints.

Simon, I use "Wax and Grease Remover", which is a dedicated paint prep solution. I think it is essentially naptha, with a few 'zenes and 'anes added to it. Any good paint supplier should have it available.
And, don't forget the "tack cloth" prior to paint!

A common one on the market is Prep-sol (or DX330). It's by PPG I believe. Take Bugeye58s advice and ask your Auto paint store what is reccomended to use with the paint system you are going to use.
If you are painting it yourself in your garage(or some other home made paint booth) Be sure to take as much care prepping the "booth" as you do your car. Clean, clean, clean the area, and make sure any oil or other fluids are FAR away.( espically anything with silicone like WD40). Any possible contaminants can ruin a perfectly prepped paint job.
Good luck.
