Figure this one out please! Disappearing gasoline

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

My fuel pump never stops ticking.

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

Thats terminal for tomarrow. I would bet that its either the float or the gross jet that is the culprit. You will have to pull the carb. Check the level of the float look for dirt in the bowl clean up the gross jet to make sure its not stuck open by a spec of dirt. Even if you changed the oil I wouldn't drive it till its fixed.

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

I won't.

And now I'm showering and going to bed, getting up at 5am!

Thanks Stewart!

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

I think the gas is contained... still a prob, tho.

I ~think~ I remember dropping one of those poxy bowl plates and fiddling the float/needle out without pullin' the carb... but I also remember telling self: not worth the extra effort to contort body parts, use mirror to see up inside, etc. R&R carb would be quicker.

If it's shovelin' gas as hard as it appears, even STARTING it is detrimental/dangerous: anything from hydro-lock to splitting the block are worst case scenerio's.

DO NOT just pull the plugs and spin it up to clear the jugs, either! DISCONNECT the diz and coil supply V+ FIRST!!

Soooo close to those REAL (SU) carbs it'd be hateful to find they'll need a new engine behind 'em before they're useful!

I'd have the beast taken home onna flatbed, or do the carb R&R there before I'd chance driving... sorry, but that's my opinion, I'm stickin' to it.

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

I'm awake, I'm awake. Had to pack things up and get ready.

The B is staying home today. I hear something that doesn't sound quite right when right after she starts. I'm not burning up an engine.

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

Man you guys were buisy last night!
Sound like you're on the right track. If that ZS is running the foam floats then somtimes they don't get along with certian fuel additives. or the plastic floats can crack.
The fuel pump not shutting off is a pretty good sign of somthing going on there.
Best of luck, I'll try to keep up with you guys.

Don't feel left out banjo! I thought the same thing: lively bunch in here. I musta fallen out too early to offer any help as well. Didn't see the thread 'till waaay too late.

Hey Jaybird, sorry to hear your trouble, your not alone, I had trouble two years in a row the night before the Vintage race at the Glen, last year I had a fire in my turn lever switch, this year I was up til 2 in the morning the night before putting my carb back on fixing the exact same problem you have! My float stuck, filled the vapor canister up with gas and then dumped a whole bunch of gas on the garage floor. I caught it before it dumped gas into the crank, although I did have that problem, emptied seven qts of "fluid" out of the oil pan!!! Please please change your oil NOW! I wouldn't even turn it over, it wouldn't hurt to change it again after running it a little. I know this is a long post but a couple of helpful hints for removing the carb and reinstalling, have a magnetic pick up tool handy, when you drop the 1/2 nuts and or washers they usualy land on the floor or the frame rail next to the firewall, needle nose pliers for the throtle return springs and start the top two nuts with just a couple of turns and then put the lower two on, if you snug the top two on too far you won't be able to get the bottoms ones on. I find a shorter 1/2 works better than a longer one????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Good luck, hope you didn't hope the engine. Keep us posted MACK /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I took the B. Was up at 4:20, woke dahubby at 5, we were out in the garage working on the B, waking the neighbors til about 6am. He was confident it was fine to drive, no issues at all today. We'll tear into it tomorrow.

My wrench believes the gas smell in the oil came from it dying on me and me trying to start it for 30 minutes (okay, so I might have flooded it once) So tomorrow, we start in.

Car show was great. I'll have pictures later. Now we're all meeting for dinner, and I am STARVED!

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

No issues with the B today at all. Gas usage was normal, no stalling out. No gas smells, no smoke anywhere. So The Wrench can work on her tomorrow. He did put a different gas filter (aha, NOW it comes out) on when he changed it last month than was on it previously. No stalling issues before that. I've got a list of things for him to check. I'll keep you posted.

Got about 4 hours sleep the last 2 nights. I'm going to upload the pictures from the car show then crash somewhere I think!

Thanks for all the help and stuff guys, you're the best!

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

ya know, yer disappearing gas begs me to ask the question, what kind of gas mileage should we be expecting from our aging cars, especially if their in "good" working order with original equipment (rebuilt or otherwise) in place? I've read people claiming that they muster 30+ Miles per gallon using the Weber 32/36 DGV and 5-speed conversion. What should we expect from the ZS assuming all of the emissions equipment is in place?

I recently calculated my gas milage and it seems kind of low to me. I drive surface sreets to and from work. Average trip is 8 to 8.5 miles one way, so I drive my 'B 16 to 17 miles a day. That's roughly 83 miles a week. I never last more than 2 weeks without having to fill up again. So, I'm looking at 160 to 170 miles per tank of gas. The last time I filled my tank I put 12 gallons in. The P.O. claims they put in a larger tank when they replaced it... They say a lot of things that I'm finding to be somewhat mis-leading, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. So, in "optimal" city driving conditions it looks like i'm getting a dismal 13 to 14 miles per gallon with no OD. This seems low to me... what about you guys? Are you all getting better gas milage than that? If so, I think I need to nuts on the engine compartment......

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

No real comparitor as I've an "older" 18GB engine w/Weber 40 DCOE fitted, and a Crane cam etc., but I STILL get about 24 hwy, 20-ish in stop-an-go... yours seems awfully thirsty for a rock-stock, *single siphon* (one carb) low compression mill.

You have compression test numbers? Your previous post about two holes burnin' right and two burnin' "fat" has some unpleasant suspicions rattlin' about in me pea brane. 3 & 4 are the "usual suspects" on these engines, BTW. They tend to run hotter than the front two.

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

I was getting 16 to 18 prior to engine rebuild around town with the zs carb and a worn out cam. I'm sure hope that britek's claim of 24ish city to 28 highway is correct with the webber.

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

I've mostly been driving the GT as my daily driver for the past year or so. Sotck engine with OD transmission gives me around 20-22 city, 26-28 freeway, 28-32 highway. The roadster was my daily driver for many years and I always got a much lower number (also stock engine but no OD). Granted I drive the roadster a lot harder than the GT.

Re: Figure this one out please! Disappearing gaso

I get 20mpg no matter how or where I drive the B.

Except for the one tankful that got about 4mpg! I expected better too, considering my other car gets about 30. I still drive the B most often.
