That's why they're doing it. They know that they can't sell smaller, reasonably priced cars profitably around here unless they build them here. They needed a local partner with excess manufacturing capacity (of course, <span style="font-style: italic">everybody </span>has <span style="font-style: italic">that </span>now) and a compatible distribution channel.
A couple of factory guys brought a 500 out to Cars and Coffee a while back. Very cool car. They said Fiat definitely wanted to sell it here but they were still working out the logistics.
Biggest faults of Fiat in the last century (last here in 80's ?) was not only a lack of proper parts chain but also certified technicians and proper dealerships. I once looked at an X19 but with kids on the way needed more room so a boxy 131 Mirafiore got me thinking Lancia Stratos. But how far do you trust a to that point used car jockey in not only selling but servicing a furrin car? So it was GM for the family ride.
Just don't remind anyone that the Yugo was a Fiat design built under license, without oversight.
