FIAT / Austin?

OK, some of you know that the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge was last weekend.

I had intended my old Escort to be used for that event a few years back, but it was never on a date when I could break away from work for a week.
And, in the long run, regular NASA club racing was more fun anyway.

But I have still been following the Challenge, since it can inspire some interesting, home-brew creations (such as a Zamboni race car).

But the FIAT 500 below (in this years Challenge) sort of blew my mind.
Instead of the regular FIAT engine, it has an "A Series" BMC engine. I have no idea how it was done.
In my wildest, most crazy moments, I don't think I would have considered putting an old Austin engine in a rear-engine FIAT.

But even if it seems goofy, I can respect the engineering and "MacGyver-ness". :jester:

More 2009 Challenge photos ~Here~.

Doesn't everything past the crank have to turn backwards?

I do believe judging from your photos that sticking to the $2009 rule is pretty much ignored.

My vote goes for the guy racing the K-car! Now that takes a certain desperation.

:iagree: Some of the wheel/tire combinations appear to cross that line...

I can't even build a B210 for under $2009.
After looking at some of those pictures,I wonder
how they can enter some of these cars with a straight
face.

Ditto, Drew. 'smits had one of those accursed things. She called it her "Dodge Insipid".

Hateful car. Absolutely hateful. :smirk:

More than that, how can the magazine continue publishing articles about those builds.

Team's build costs are published in the magazine, selling of unused parts to recoup costs is allowed, and some people have waaay to much time/skill/creativity (plus, probbably more than a little luck shopping).

There was a Grand challenge in San Diego - SD Rev - where the $1000 budget makes $2009 look positively Formula One ish.

Costs are but I'm betting there's some fudging!
