Feudalism Finally Ends in UK!

Europe's last existing feudal state will disappear forever today when the UK Channel Island of Sark votes in its first democratic government.

~INFO~

The tiny island abolished its 450-year-old system of unelected ruling descendants of the original leaders.

Sark is run by the Chief Pleas.

The leader of the Chief Pleas is the 'Seigneur of Sark', an office which can trace its history back to the first feudal lord Hellier de Carteret, who ruled from 1563 to 1578.

The Seigneur holds bizarrely antiquated rights, including the sole right to keep pigeons and unspayed female dogs, and all debris washed up between the high and low tide lines.

Cars are banned on Sark and there is no tax, or unemployment.

No tax, no unemployment & they want to change? I'm ready to move there!

No unemployment in a feudal system, basically means serfdom. Everyone works, but payment may not be currency, you might get a cabbage or something.
No taxes means, the person is owned, to be called upon at their lieges request.
Unless you're in the two top rungs of the feudal ladder, I don't fancy it.
Sark has always been a bit of a joke to the UK.
I'm trying to think of the name of that book, about life in the channel islands during German occupation in WWII, can't for the life of me remember..... It was good anyway.

The election's been a little problematical:

Quote:]Candidates backed by the brothers had proposed sweeping development of the island to create the first paved roads and to allow cars and helicopters for the first time. Their opponents advocated retaining the island's sleepy charms, and making only gradual reforms.
[/QUOTE]
Apparently a number of local businesses run by two brothers have been ordered to close- with possibly disasterous consequences for the local community.

The Brother's fielded a slate of candidates and found most were rejected and have reacted in a manner that seemingly punishes the "serfs" for not choosing a new set of masters that would force changes on them that would alter the basic character (and what some might argue was its unique appeal) of the place.

Ops... have I become political?

Doesn't seem like there would've been any difference in serfdom & 'democracy' if the brothers' candidates had won....& methinks anybody who doesn't like life on the island can hop the next boat to France or England itself!
