In the early 70s, I participated in the destruction of a pair of Ferrari 250 GTs (not Cabriolets).
I worked part-time at a foreign car repair shop in Lakewood NJ and the owner wanted to build a front-engine "special". He picked up two wrecked Ferrari 250s and we torched the oval frame up in one and shortened it. Pulled all the drivetrain and suspension from the other and scrapped the body.
The resultant "special" looked like a Porsche 917. We ran in some SCCA regionals at Lime Rock and it had lots of teething problems.
One day, my college roommate, who also worked at the place, took it out onto Route 9 (in Lakewood) with "dealer license plates" to test it out. It got away from him and he destroyed it by running into a telephone pole. There was a big article in the local newspaper about it.
That ended his car racing career...he raises horses now!
