What are you all using for fender/wing/guard protection while working on your cars? With my new paint, I am going to be very nervous about leaning over the car to get at the engine compartment.

I use moving blankets you can purchase at Harbor Freight. I cut out the hood but leave it attached at the windshield end. Covers both fenders and nose.
 
A while back this idea was shared by I-don’t-remember-who and John Sims and I decided it was a great idea and each made a version.

During a stint I in the Hospital, my depressed Black Lab decided to make a bed on my son’s bed and tore up the spread. Returning home to the destroyed bed spread, I was elated (not my wife or son) as I had been looking for a donor spread that I could use to construct a fender cover that I would not feel guilty destroying. I needed a cover that was thick enough to protect my Healey’s paint when working on the engine but one that was not too big I would step on the draping sides or too large I would have difficulty tossing it on and off the car. As you can see, this was what I came up with and although the dog’s damage does intrude into some areas, it protects almost all of what I wanted. Additionally, since the cover encircles and extends into the engine compartment, it stays in place and allows moving around the compartment without repositioning the cover. Additional

Take a look at John Sims article at (https://www.healey6.com/Technical/Protective Cover.pdf) which provides construction directions. Sounds like "Tproject" above may have taken this approach.

It might have been my post but in any case I made such a blanket several years ago out of a king-sized quilt. In addition to having the opening for the engine bay I also have two 6" diameter circles which go over my fender mirrors and keep the blanket in place, plus I have a couple of grommets pressed in that I can use for tie-wraps to the windshield wiper bases for additional stability.

I wouldn't be surprised if it came from your creative mind originally. Michael, although I had probably stated my praise back then, now backed with greater experience I believe this to be the best design for a car work cover I have found .... and the price was good too.

Here's a picture of mine. I made it out of an inexpensive cotton king-size quilt.

Like it Michael - gonna copy it with an old bedspread ! Just had mine painted too and super careful with the new paint.
