Felt bushing?

Yep, have installed both the top and the bottom one, they are the same.

The flat peice is curved around to make a circle, soak it in oil for a few min first then it will not need lubed in your life time.

The only way to get it in is to just work it carefully with something like a small screw driver for starters then what ever seems right.

Actually they are rather easy to do when the shaft and shaft cover are out of the car.

Oh, forgot to say, get the shaft smoothed where the felt rides on it with some fine sand paper or the stearing will not want to center after rounding a corner till you get lots of miles on it. They are rather tight.

Thanks Jack. I was trying to install it dry to save an oil mess. I figured I could lube it after it was in. I may pull the tube out if it's not too much trouble.

I ended up removing the clamping bolt at the base of the column and sliding the shaft up. It was very rusty and crusty. I sanded the steering shaft and slid the felt in while sliding the shaft back down. I used engine assembly lube on the felt.

Thanks again for the tip. I was surprised how rusty the shaft was where the felt needed to ride.

That rusty and crusty is because it had not been lubed in what, maybe 50 years, hehe.

Bet it lasts your life time now.

Shealey..they slid right in? I got my top felt in OK, but the bottom one seemed too thick. I could not, for the life of me, get that one in and finally re-lubed the old one and re-installed. The bottom one is tough with the 'lip' that is on the tube.
The new one must have been 2x the thickness of the old one..and when I test wrapped it around the shaft, it seemed too long..maybe I got a dud felt(?)
Glad to hear yours went in OK!
