Felipe Massa has successfully undergone surgery for the injuries he suffered in his accident in qualifying in Hungary.

Ferrari said the driver will now remain under observation in the intensive care unit at the AEK hospital in Budapest, where the Brazilian was taken after being hit by a spring during Q2.

Massa had suffered a damaged skull and brain concussion, as well as a cut on his forehead.
 
coil spring, not torsion bar. took the visor out and part of the helmet. or so I heard on one report. very close thing.
 
O.O omg I hope this does not result in him never racing again, as he is incredibly talented.
 
Saw a film of it on the news last night. Second time around, you could see the coil spring bounch off the track just ahead and appeared to hit him in the head. Spooky stuff that.
 
F1 has informed YouTube to pull all videos of the accident. There are some news sites that have it, though. I have a link to a website, but it's graphic and I'm going to check with Basil to see if it's alright to post it.

On another note, I checked Autosport to see how his progress is and inadvertently found out the winner of the race before Fox broadcasts the race this afternoon. :wall:
 
This kind of incident is tragic, and possibly avoidable. I hope that it may lead to improved helmets for drivers, especially in open-cockpit racers. There's no reason why a tougher helmet can't be introduced. Long overdue, IMHO.

I hated to hear this, I hope he's back soon. Certainly one of the more talented drivers on the circuit, and a nice guy by all accounts.
 
Unfortunately, I doubt that he will be returning real soon! Latest report I heard was that he was in "life-threatening but stable" condition with a fractured skull and a concussion! Kind of shakes ones confidence in the latest helmet technology when one figures those guys have to be using the best around and his didn't do much to protect him in that instance, but then again there are so many factors involved!
 
These helmets took over eight years to develop, there are just some variables that you cannot prepare for. A three pound spring hitting the helmet, at the visor, at 120 mph cannot be one of those variables. It's one of the unfortunate realities of open cockpit racing. I would be surprised if Felipe would have anything negative to say about his helmet's performance.

BTW, there's been some good news out of AEK Hospital in Hungary!
