Hey folks

Ive been toolin' away pretty well so far on pulling stuff out and apart, and I even spent 350 bucks on parts Sunday. And then, I attempted to take off the hubs so that i could change the brake rotor and put new wheel bearings.

I have a 1971 MGB GT with wire wheels.

Now, Bentley's Manual simply says "Remove dust cover" but I dont believe it is that simple. Once I pull the caliper, undo the four nuts and bolts that hold the rotor to the hub, i peered inside the axle and saw the dust cap sunk in about 4-6 inches, with a stud sticking out. Now Bentley's manual says that I need a special service tool after i remove the dust cover, but Im not sure where to find said tool either.

If anyone can help me, I will grovel at your feet. HELP!

The stud is treaded. I don't remember what size nut it is, it's fine pitched, but I took along bolt but a nut on 1/2 ways, and screwed it onto the dust cover, then yank like a SOB.

The real fun part is setting the endplay with the shims on install. But ask again when you get there.

Johns reply is correct.But lets make a simple tool to do the job. First get a threaded coupling about 1 1/2" long having the same thread as the dust cover stud. also pick up a fully threaded bolt about 4" long with the same thread as the stud/coupling and a matching nut.Find a large washer that will span the end of the splined hub.Screw the nut on the bolt up high,add the big washeradd another nut and the coupling.lock the coupling down using the last nut installed. screw the coupling on to the dust cover thread and then tighten the remaining nut down against the washer get a wrench if required and tighten the nut until the dust cover is released.---FWIW--Keoke-OK?

Thanks for your help on this matter. The local nut and bolt shop had to order the correct coupling, but once it came in, it was a cinch.
