Today is an "interesting" anniversary.
During the night of 24-25 February, 1942, US anti-aircraft fire targeted "something" over Los Angeles, California.

One day earlier, February 23, a Japanese submarine had actually fired on the coast at Santa Barbara; a massive Richfield Refining Company aviation fuel tank was destroyed.
Could be that the 1942 "Battle of Los Angeles" was an over-reaction to a weather balloon, especially as there really was an attack on the coast one day before. And the War Department was reluctant to release info, as they didn't want to publicize US preparedness and defense weaknesses at the time.
But interesting, never the less.
