basil, that's also one of my favs. i recently found this, Google "aero vintage books last flight of the phoenix" you dont need to buy any book, it gives a wonderful insight to the production of the movie, detailing the people involved, and the tragedy that ensued, some great pictures, im sure youll enjoy it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Most of what has been posted is on my list, but for me 'La Strada' is at the top. 'heck in the Pacific' is another to be remembered which had a cast of two of which I could only understand the lines of one.

Lots of great movies mentioned so far but for a truly off beat movie here is my recommendation.
“Gross Point Blank”
With John Cusack, Dan Aykroyd, Alan Arkin, Joan Cusack and a scrumptious Minnie Driver.
Not enough words to describe this movie lots of twists & subplots running throughout the movie – but in a nut shell its basically about a professional hit man who returns home for his 10 year high school reunion.
Lots of great movies mentioned so far but for a truly off beat movie here is my recommendation.

Yet another movie that's a little off beat that has always been a favorite of mine is:
"TimeRider - The Adventures of Lyle Swann”
Weak cinematography haunts this totally off the hook Sci-Fi Western - but I’ve always liked it. Story line revolves around this motorcycle racer who gets accidentally transported back in time to the late old west.
Staring Fred Ward (Swann), Peter Coyote, LQ Jones and an ultra sultry Belinda Bauer.
Best line from the movie came from Outlaw Resse (Peter Coyote) when he said: "If General Lee'd of had that thing we'd of won the war"... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
That said I'm huge Fred Ward fan as he's stared in a lot of my favorite off beat movies;
Remo Williams, Tremors, Southern Comfort, The Right Stuff and Uncommon Valor to name a few.

Gotta watch the first half of "Full Metal Jacket" at least once a year...just to get my "mind right" and get motivated. Matthew Modine, and Leo DeCaprio may have been the stars, but Lee Ermey "stole" every scene he was in! "WHYYOUUNORGANIZEDGRABASSTICPIECES OF...!" Shoulda won an Academy Award for Supporting Actor.

I've noticed a couple of John Cusack movies on this list, to which I would like to add High Fidelity. It's a wonderful film (and book), but it is pretty unusual in it's pacing and direction.
I'm not sure if it's considered "offbeat", but Memento certainly played around with the form.
Despite the star power in it's cast, O Brother, Where Art Thou cannot be considered anything but "quirky", can it?
