OKAY...who knows a little about it? I'm beginning to get interested but its been awhile since I was down that way.

Re: Farbourg Marigny

Watcha wanta know?

Re: Farbourg Marigny

Well, you're distant like me...but, I'm thinking now's a good time to buy one of the little shotguns & renovate it as a vacation home....need somebody whos local to tell me what's happening there....

Re: Farbourg Marigny

Last I heard, it had been going through some major renovation, even before Katrina. Nice area, but had issues in the past. I would imagine the area has an association charged with zonings, restrictions, promotion and such. Certainly would be a nice place to have a base for the Quarter and downtown. It will be interesting to see what comes of the Crescent City as a whole. Whatever the case, it'll be long-term.

By the way, just so's ya know - proper spelling is Faubourg Marigny. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Sounds like a teacher I had in the fifth grade, when we moved to Corpus Christi. First day of school she asked me where I was from, and I said "Lou'siana."

She corrected me and said, "It should be pronounced, 'LouIsiana'."

I told her, "I'm FROM there; I know how to pronounce it!"

We lived way out off Elysians Field near where UNO is now located...I used to cut though the Marigny as a kid on my way to and from Audobon Park..amazing..we'd hop buses, trolleys, etc. early in the morning, spend the day in the park & zoo & make our way back across town in the evening....loved wandering through the Vieux Carre & down Frenchman Road listening to the music as the sun was going down (even as a 10-year old on the way home)....heck, I wouldn't do that now though as an adult!!

When we visited N'Awlins for my 60th birthday, a cousin & I took Jerri and his wife on our old daily route (but we did it then by car largely - except for walking around the Marigny & French Qarter)....they both felt we were fools for doing that as kids & our grandmother was wrong to let us...

....another time & place, sigh......

Re: Farbourg Marigny

My best buddy and I used to frequent a place on S. Rampart, I believe - The Flower Pot. Great hippie-type hangout in the late sixties. Had some really good bands that would play there.

For our first date, Janet and I spent Mardi Gras day walking from St. Charles and Napoleon to the Quarter and back. Then ended up on Monkey Hill in Audubon Park - 1969.

You're right about another time, another place...

Re: Farbourg Marigny

I was at the last Mardi Gras that was really a Mardi Gras & would like to see how things have progressed but even my husband won't venture down to New Orleans.....just really dangerous- had friends that went to the LSU contest but went early game day and came back afterward- said there were way more police but just smarter not to linger. Hopefully building will pick up as our housing market is dropping like a hot rock....more contractors will be willing to work on the rebuilding. Randi

Re: Farbourg Marigny

I looked up Faubourg Marigny to find out what in the He- uh, heck you guys are talkin' about.

I still don't know much except that the place that produced Jelly Roll Morton must be a cool neighborhood.

Re: Farbourg Marigny

I will chime in here, like Mickey, I know the city fairly well. Just came from a 2 day hitch repairing my son's home in the Irish Channel.

If you want intrigue and mystery, live in the Marigny. It is the French Quarter without the raunch. It is the Uptown without the holdbacks. If you want to live in New Orleans, and can afford it, Faubourg Marigny is the place to be. A friend of mine lives in the Marigny and it is like a community unlike any you have been in. Rich, poor, bohemian, gay, straight, historic, cultural, dangerous, unique, unknown to outsiders. It is everything you would want in New Orleans, but the prices have gone up. You need to spend a weekend walking the streets to get the feel and talk to some realtors.
I would live in the Marigny in a second.

Re: Farbourg Marigny

Bill - that's exactly what we're gonna do in February....find a B&B in the Marigny & spend a few days wandering....I've contacted the Preservation Society to begin learning the do's & don't's....we'll see

But, I was hoping somebody with recent experience would chime in - thanks! I was hoping to find the flavor of 50's N'Awlins & from everything I'm learning, the Marigny still has it....

Uh, did I just miss something here? More recent than yesterday?

Re: Farbourg Marigny

And if you even pronounce it Farbourg Marigny, you will need to carry a Glock.

No, you just answered my question & confirmed some of the internet research I've been doing!

We're planning a trip to N'Awlins 8-12 Feb (right after Mardi Gras) so a little more exploration is in order....Bill, will you be around the city then?

Mickey - wanna come along?
