Fatal Midget Accident

I have a guy who lives behind me.He got a DUI.
Then another.I would see him driving (possibly -
after drinking).
I called the CHP (highway patrol),asking if his
license was revoked,etc.I was told that "We can't re-
lease that infomation - it's confidential".What's
wrong with this picture?

I've tried my best to avoid this thread, but here goes.

My twin brother got a DUI and lost his license for 1 year (first offense in Ontario).
He then had a breathalyzer machine hooked to his car for one year.
On top of that, his insurance quadrupled for 5 years.
His solution, QUIT DRINKING!!!!!
He has NOT had a drink in seven years.
There was no accident involved or any loss of income except for his own.

He says, as do I, education is the only way to cure this.

Just thought I would tell a good story about this issue.

I too have constrained myself from joining in this discussion, but not wanting to lean one way or the other on punitive measures or drinking vs. sobriety, I can only say punishment is not a deterrent to the problem drink-and-driver (obvious by all accounts!...he will even drive on a suspended license!). As a society, we must protect ourselves from them and at the same time help them from being the problem by providing an alternative to getting behind the wheel while drunk. Perhaps the police (who are there to serve and protect) can provide an auxillary service. Surely any cop would rather drive a drunk home from the bar rather than have to respond to the scene of the carnage he could create!! This could also be efficient in that the drunk who is a problem at the bar(beligerent, etc.) could be picked up right at the bar and taken to a cell to detoxify. A ride home in a cop car could promote drunken civility! I am reminded how Andy Griffith dealt with the problem in Mayberry!! :jester: :cheers:

Don't think I've ever done this on these boards but it might be a good time to draw this thread to a close. I certainly don't object to any of it and God knows it needs to be said. At the same time I'm just as happy to get back to talking about repairs, restoration and the coming of spring.

Just my 2 cents

This is BS. I get pulled over for no seat belt and if I don't pay they pull my license. This clown has 18 DUI's and is still on the road and killing people!! This is so wrong! What happened to justice. Does know one care. I'm stunned by this.

What do you propose to stop or curtail it, then? Ideas??

It seems that long prison sentences will certainly take the offenders off the road, but only as long as they're in prision. Life prison sentences for vehicular homicide?? Probably not. Maybe it's simply a risk that we cannot avoid on today's highways. Maybe not . . .

What's your suggestion for stopping it?

I could be wrong, but this is actually part of the public record. You should be able to find this out by doing some research. But not by calling the CHP and asking.

We have now had <span style="font-weight: bold">two</span> polite requests (right here in the thread) that have asked that <span style="font-style: italic">"this might be a good time to draw this thread to a close"</span>.

I had <span style="text-decoration: underline">hoped</span> that others would thoughtfully consider these requests and move on from this subject.

I can only assume that despite reading these requests, some of you have chosen to ignore them.

Before we have any <span style="font-style: italic">other</span> comments about who to blame or what types of creative punishments to mete out, <span style="text-decoration: underline">I am locking the thread</span>.

I <span style="font-weight: bold">hate</span> doing this and would prefer to moderate with more of a light hand.

I am deeply disappointed that I have to do it.

This is a subect that can strike raw emotion for many people (including me).
Everyone agrees that this is a horrendous problem that needs to be dealt with <span style="font-style: italic">somehow</span>.
Speaking personally, I am active with a group in my community that tries to address this troubling issue.

I sure <span style="font-style: italic">hope</span> that some of you that have been so vociferous about this problem <span style="text-decoration: underline">here</span> are just as highly active in your community about addressing it.

I sure hope....</span>
