My birthday was last Tuesday and one of my birthday presents was a new hard drive for my MacBook. I have a 2009 Unibody Aluminum Macbook that had a slow (5400RPM) 160GB hard drive. I wanted more space, but I also wanted something faster. I thought about a new SSD (flash) drive, but to get any real storage capacity it costs "a nominal egg" (like over $600 for 300GB). Then I found some reviews of a new hybrid drive that Seagate makes called the Momentus XT Hybrid (500GB). It is a decent drive in its own right at 7200 RPM with a 32MB cache. But what makes the XT different is that Seagate slapped on 4GB of "smart" SSD memory. The SSD memory keeps track of what files you're system opens most frequently and keeps these stored in the flash memory. This way, common tasks like booting up and running your common applications will see a big boost in performance. For example, before I installed the XT, my Macbook boot time was around 42 seconds from the moment I pushed the power button until the desktop appeared and was ready to use. With the XT installed that boot time has been reduced to around 17 seconds! Of course I've only had it a short time, but so far I'm very pleased with it!
Oh yeah, my other B-day presents included a new "select comfort" mattress (really for both of us) and I got a copy of the Federalist Papers and a few other radical books, like "Linux for Dummies," Windows 7 for Dummies, and "iPhone App Development for Dummies" (What can I say, Borders was having a going out of business sale).
