TR2/3/3A Fan hub extension too short?

I got started back on my TR3 today, working to get the new fan and radiator in so I can get the car on the road. When I went to install the Macy's Hurricane fan, I realized that there is absolutely no way it will fit. The fan extension that runs from the pulley just barely clears the tubular cross bar. This has me now wondering if the extension is the wrong one? Too short? The car came to me with a yellow plastic fan, with the rear of the fan somewhat shaved off.

Looking at pictures on Moss, what I have does not seem to match what should be on the car.

Any ideas?

Your extension hub does look short. In fact shorter than the short version. There are 2 sizes between the TR3&4. Here is a pic of what I believe is a short one. Also a pic of my TR3 with the Hurricane fan. But I believe I have the long extension on this car.

Thanks for that confirmation. Looks like this is the TR3A part I need from Moss:
> EXTENSION, fan hub <

Have to get that ordered -- and hope that the bolt that holds it on is the right length for the proper extension!

My guess is that is the short extension. What is the length of yours compared to my picture?
I suggest you contact Macy, who made the hurricane and ask before ordering.

I have 2 excess short ones. At $20 each. But I still think you need the longer one like the TR4.

This one is very, very short in comparison. 2 5/8" to where the fan connects. With the long extra tube, I wonder if it's some sort of aftermarket option for a very different fan type. Going to have to replace it one way or another.

I will get hold of Macy's Garage and see which extension they recommend.

You stated that there was a yellow plastic fan on the car. Maybe it was made for that. Normally that yellow fan has to be mounted backwards on a TR3.
You might be able to sell that to somebody along with the yellow fan.

I heard back from Macy’s Garage this morning. Looks like I need to source the standard shorter TR3 fan extension:

Macy’s response:
The Hurricane fan is a DIRECT bolt-on replacement for the OEM Triumph fan blade. Therefore, you will need an original length TR3-3A/B hub extension (and bolt). Hub should be 3-13/16" from flat mounting surface to flat mounting surface. The longer TR4 extension only works on a TR2/3 if you are installing one of the "backward mounted" yellow plastic TR250 fans (which don't work nearly as well as the Hurricane). The .100" thick spacer is intended to go toward the front of the fan, but if you need to move the fan blade forward by .100", it can be placed at the rear of the blade.

If clearance problems persist (which they really shouldn't), check your engine mounts and confirm that the motor mount plate on the front of the engine is perfectly flat from side to side. We have seen a few instances where these plates have been bent which moves the engine forward/rearward.

That was a very good reply from Macy's. Now you have the true facts.

Very good to have the correct info. I’ve mostly been on the MG/Spridget side of things, so lots to learn about this TR3.

Charley, I’ve PM’d you about your extra short extensions.
