Fan Fitment Issue

Gentlemen:

Over the winter I acquired two 1275 engines. I tore down and cleaned up both, but eventually focused on one to complete first. Tonight we finished adjusting the valves, so I started to do the final assembly. When I started to install the fan I noticed a problem. First the fan had to be tapped onto the water pump pulley. Then I noticed the fan blades were making contact with the cylinder shaped aparatus attached to the timing chain cover.

I then tried the fan on the other 1275 and found the same problem.

I took these engines apart in December/January. I recall one of the fans had broken blades, so I threw it out. It put this other one aside, thinking that installing the fan was a pretty low tech operation, so I didn't give it much thought.

Do I just have the wrong fan? It is a six blade yellow-plastic fan that looks much like the one on my 1100.

Can I simply sway the fan off the 1100? Is it the same?

Let me know your thoughts.

If you have the single groove pulley, then you need a spacer.

After that input joggled my memory, I've decided to put my alter ego - Mickey Dumeass - on suspension.

I forgot all about the pulley......

I seem to have the same problem - that is with my "new to me" plastic fan. I was wondering what are the difference in the pulleys?

Original 948s and 1098s used a single belt pulley.
1275s have the oil separator canister on the timing cover, very early 1275s used a 1/4" thick spacer under the fan to move it out from the canister.
Later 1275s with the smog pump used a thicker 2 belt pulley, it is already spaced out to clear the canister. The 2nd belt ran the air pump.
If you have the 2 belt pulley, any fan will work.
If you have the canister on the timing cover, you need the 2 belt pulley or the single pulley with the spacer.
The spacer is available from Mini Mania
