Fan compensator solenoid switch..I got it!

So in another post I was complaining about my Spal fan sucking down so hard on my alternator that the engine idle would drop to the point of stalling in traffic (my fan pulls 22+ amps when it kicks on, and I have a 73 amp alternator). I think I have solved the problem, thanks to Dave at TRF and David Hayden with the TR8 featured in Hemmings. Triumph made an electric solenoid for the TR8 that was designed to bump the accelerator up a notch when the AC comes on. Well, I garnered one from Dave at TRF (NOS, love those old parts wrapped in wax paper!). What a cool part. All I have to do is fabricate (MacGiver) an adjustable bracket off my carb mounting bolt and wire her up! The solenoid has a 7 mm throw, with plenty of punch, so I will need the adjustable feature to get it right when the fan kicks on. Just enough to jump my RPMs up about 200. Wish me luck. I would like to finish it by the New Orleans show in a few weeks.

Good score Bill.

You can make a bracket and your golden.

We are Happy! :yesnod:

Dave :savewave:

So did that turn out to be significantly cheaper than the GM part that I and others suggested?

:cowboy:

Wow, I'm impressed!

A/C idle compensating solenoid, huh?

...wow... who'da thunk.

Sorry, Doc, it was originally your idea.

Just so it ~works~!!

...and it will.

Have ya got a good diagram or photo of the "original" linkage setup to pattern your fabrication after?
I ~think~ I may have a drawing of one in a Lotus Esprit manual here someplace if not.

Fantastic! I like the solution. I may need this when i get my tr4 running in the next 10 years, maybe.

Uh,
what happens when you are driving and the fan comes on? Does it add acceleration when you don't want it? Just checking.
R

Nope. It only kicks up far enuff on the linkage at the idle position to bring up the idle speed to wherever you preset it. A kinda "second idle stop setting" device.

NOW it gets kewl!!
