Aside from Facebook being a "diabolical" Marxist conspiracy tool, etc., I actually like it. It's allowed me to reacquaint myself with many childhood, high school and college friends, many of whom I'd probably never had contact with otherwise.
Over the years I've moved a few times from city to city, leaving behind dear friends. It's hard to maintain contact with most of them and Facebook bridges that gap very nicely. It's great to view photos of their families and lives, and to see how they've fared over the years, and in some cases, decades. I've actually met happily with a few of my old buddies, all because of Facebook. You can't put a price on that.
Used judiciously, Facebook and similar social media are great ways to maintain contact with friends who live far away. I don't use it for career or work purposes and I'm very careful about the people I take on as "friends". As such, it serves its purpose for my needs.
A friend is a good thing to have, and you can't make old friends. Using modern social medial to rekindle old friendships is a marvel, I think, modern technology at its best.
YMMV.
