Well a friend of mine down the street who is into porsches recently bought one of those F-150 King Ranch editions to pull his cars to the track.....Now I am not a truck guy, or a Ford guy....But this is a pretty sweet pickup...The interior in that thing looks like it belongs in a Cadillac, very well appointed, nice overall theme. I was really impressed.
 
I’ve always been a huge fan of the King Ranch. Always thought the “Limited” or “Eddie Bauer” upper trim level packages found on most Ford SUVs where a bit too preppy and/or soccer-mom-ish to be on a “Truck”.

Back to the King Ranch I actually saw one at the San Diego auto show earlier this year that was perfect (save the missing gun rack Marine Corps bumper sticker /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). Personally I think it’s much nicer looking than Ford’s Harley Davidson edition. The cowhide interior of the Ranch makes me feel like I’m sitting in an old hunting lodge or in the local saddle & tack store. But sadly I think it’s so nice that I’d be afraid of messing it up with my dirty old work boots. So for now I’ll just have to stick with the mouse fur cloth interior of my F-150 Supercrew.

Sure trucks aren’t for everybody and indeed there are a number of posers out there who really don’t need a truck. But there are a number of folks who (like myself) use their trucks every day to pull double duty. Every day I haul kids & a bed full of tools & such that’d barely fit in my Sedan at the same time. I used to have to unload the truck each night so I could pick up the kids at night & drop off them off again in the morning. Then return home to reload all my work stuff. Not too efficient if you ask me.

Even so I will defend the casual truck owner who uses his or her trucks as a daily driver to commute to & from work then on the weekends used it to haul their toys, perform honey-dos around the house. I mean perhaps one vehicle is all they can afford? So it seems more economical to have one vehicle to pull double duty than one that is limited in it's abilities. And even if you could afford more than one vehicle a truck sure smarter than having two or three different vehicles that you have to park, maintain and carry insurance on. Then there’s the cost of acquiring all those different vehicles just so they don’t offend someone because the cargo bed is empty one day.

Nope, I don't care what anybody says. IMHO four door pickup trucks are a modern marvel. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
 
I agree with Bret completely.....I think they're great...The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to get one as a Caddy replacement when it dies.....Right now I am looking for a used Sonoma/S10 or Ranger as a beater for my son, and a parts hauler.
As far as being a poser becasue your beds not always full I don't agree...Am I a poser with my top up on a sunny day?

I love my Tacoma four-door. Very comfortable, and when I need it, plenty of room to haul whatever. Only thing it doesn't have (wasn't offered!) is manual transmission.

I guess I am pretty pessimistic then, I've only had the top down on my Jag once this season!

Why would you want a manual in a pickup?.....I like my toys manual and my drivers auto, maybe I am just to lazy to shift.
 
That's what the salesman asked me. He said their research indicated that they wouldn't sell enough manuals in the "nicer" trucks... people who spend "that much" don't want to shift for themselves.

I don't know about that; guess I'm old-fashioned, and I simply prefer manual transmission. Maybe it has something to do with control and the loss thereof these days!

Admittedly I used the term “poser” a little loosely in my last post. While the term has many connotations that come to mind personally – IMHO if you own a convertible & drive it with the top down isn’t the same as owning a truck and “never” using it to its full potential.

However I never said that just because you’re bed isn’t used every day you are automatically a poser only that many Truck & SUV haters wrongly use that to drive home their point and affirm their hatred of them.

A good example of a “poser” is someone who has a $40 or $50 thousand dollar truck, throws another $10 to $20 or more in lift kits & shinny doodads and thingamabobs – yet never take that monster down a dirt road. That’s a poser.

I have a 91 chevy 2wd silverado. I picked it up cheap from a customer when he grenaded the diff. 1 used diff later, and I have now put 30k on it. I commute with it(parity with SUVs and cab drivers) haul stuff for the shop, and do just about anything else you can use a truck for. I wish it was a 5 speed occasionally, but for the most part, the auto is ok. I spend a lot of time in city traffic, so by now I might hate a manual. I keep an Audi 5000 Quattro wagon for snow duty though. It is really a nice car, and it will go just about anywhere a 4wd truck will. It has locking center and rear diffs, so I am limited only by ground clearance. I laugh at SUVs, because this car is more capable, gets 32 mpg highway,is at least as luxurious, and did not cost squat. I won't drive my Jags home to DC tho, cause the roads are horrible, and they are targets for crackheads. I wouldn't want to try to find a quarter window for an XJSC on short notice. Yeah, I love my truck, and I am just waiting for some eco yuppie to give me a lecture about it. I will zip up my power window, crank up my AC, and turn up the tunes. unfortunatly, it is not a diesel, so I can't leave them in a cloud of smoke.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif Not trying to make light of our eco situation...But a few years ago we had some 'eco yuppie' protestors outside the building(I work for an oil company) at the end of the day I pulled out from behind the building in my old Camaro with a wide open exhaust and blew some nice black smoke at em /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif(It was winter so the auto choke made it run real rich until it got to operating temp).

Hehehe, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Yes well, I guess I am. I see’em everyday on my way to & from work. While I’ve done some significant upgrades under the hood & up-rated (not lifted) suspension and running gears, other than that – my 4x4’s exterior (pictured above earlier) is pretty much stock XLT trim.
 
I had a rental `05 F-150 for a few days last summer as I had to move a shed.....Took it to a closed construction site and had some fun...I am usually not into the offroading thing at all, but it was a good experience.

I don't know about most of you guys, but I use my truck as
a truck, I haul about 1300lbs of tools around every time I
get in it, yeah, it's old, yeah, it's loud, but it gets me,
and my tools, where they need to be... However, my boss,
who owns one of those new Caddy Escalates is an oppisite
of me, last winter, he wanted me to follow him down to the
tire shop. He was buying new snow tires and rims, I said
I'll take it down and throw the summer tires in the back,
the look on his face was priceless...
