extra lean when hot...

hey all,

I'm not sure if anyone remembers my past fuel supply issues on my '76 'B with stock ZS Carb and manifolds. At one point, I thought they were solved. However, with the weather warming up, they seem to be returning. The other day I discovered the air pump is not working: it spins freely but doesn't pump any air, and I think the gulp valve/anti-backfire valve is stuck shut. I also installed the stock heatshield (missing when I got the car) hoping that it would help resolve the lean when warmed up condition, but it doesn't seem to do much in this department.

The symptoms are:

-The car runs great if the weather is cool.
-The engine starts acting lean after it's thoroughly warmed up.
-The time it takes for the engine to start acting lean is inversely proportional to the temperature of the weather. (i.e. it acts lean faster if its warm out, and takes longer to act lean if it's cool out).

Now, I know a lot of people would suggest just sealing off the air pump and fittings and then just tune the carb for best performance. As tempting as that is, I feel compelled to make the car work the way is was supposed to with the emissions parts installed, because it would mean less headaches for me in the advent of getting flagged for state emissions testing. Also, I'm weary of burning out my catalytic converter (again) by enrichening the mixture too much without the air pump working.

Finally, the question I have burning is: Will fixing the air pump and air injection manifold potentially resolve my car's condition? I'm semi suspecting it might, but I'm also semi suspecting that I may be experiencing a mild form of vapor-lock, due to the heat under the hood... You guys have any thoughts, regarding the symptoms and my possible solution?

As always, thanks for you're thoughts and suggestions oh mighty gurus of LBCs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't have an answer, but I do have a question for you.
when you added the heatshield, what material did you use on the side that faces the engine? some sort of asbestos, or something else?

I'm not sure what the material is made of. It was a 'refinished' stock heatshield. It didn't feel like metal, so it could very well be asbestos...

I've been thinking about getting some 'universal' formable heatsheild material to use in conjunction with the original heatshield in hopes of reducing the air temp around the carb.
