[expensive] frustration...

On the weekend my favourite workhorse camera lens basically quit on me (a Tamron 17 - 50 F/2.8 - Nikon mount), the ring used to go between focal distances is stuck! It will still take photos but I have no more focal distance control, now trying to find a possible repair seems to be virtually impossible here in town... It almost looks like my only reasonable option is to simply replace it which will be rather costly, even a repair will cost enough...

The last thing I need this time of year, when my photography goes into full gear with summertime and events... :nonod:

Sorry to hear - and of course the timing would suck. That said, Tamron sells parts to customers - you might want to try to repair it yourself - especially as the alternative is new - you really have nothing to loose.

Here is some info: https://thingsimdoing.wordpress.com/2009/11/14/diy-slr-lens-repair/

Different part I know but worth a try

Have you considered using a BFH for it's intended function?

Maybe a little heat?

Or some of Doc's Weasel Pee?

Just found out that it should be covered under warranty, will check in with the local store tomorrow, it just better not take too long to get it done! :hammer: That lens is a key one I use often, especially at events and concerts and such, suppose I can do some rentals in the meantime but that's far less convenient...

Lokk at this as a time to be challenged to make do with what you have. I've learned more by being forced to use what little I had then I ever did w/ the right stuff. Once I got a'hold for the right equipment the results were stellar.

Just got back from the store, the lens is on the way to Tamron, the guy at the desk warned me though that there is no guarantee they will repair it under warranty if they deem the damage to be from a drop of any sort (I swear I've never dropped that lens!), if they won't repair it under warranty I'll likely have to replace the lens, I have the money for it but need to be careful these days too...

Then got home to this e-mail:

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">Hi James,

I’m so sorry, I forgot to get back to you!

They decided to use a different photo of Alley Oop instead.

Please be assured that it was not an issue of price. Your pricing turned out to be in line with what other photographers told us.

I like your photos, and I will keep you in mind for future projects.

My apologies for not getting back to you.

Not a good day, I've had things like this happen far too often... Like the poetry text book cover I almost got once... :wall: I'll keep that advice in mind Billy, but I'm not in a good mood these days, it will take a little convincing...

James,

Sorry to hear that - I hope that things turn out
well for you.
