exhaust tone?

My Healey expert guy says don't get the stainless exhaust that Moss offers for my 1958 BN6 that i will not like the exhaust tone..?

I recently installed the Moss SS exhaust on my BJ8, and I really like the sound, it might be a touch "tinnier" sounding that the old one, ( hard to say due to holes and leaks in the old one). It looks
Spectacular and with the new mounting hardware it sits higher under the car. Best single high dollar purchase that I have made for my car. Wasn't any fun installing though, broken manifold studs caused a lot of busted knuckles, and drilling. In the end awesome outcome.

I just installed mine.

Not sure about the note yet as I still have some work to do to get the engine fired up, but I should be able to report (maybe post a video if I can figure that out) in a month or so. Superwrench is at about the same place in his build as I am but he inherited my NOS exhaust. Same engine too. We should be able to do an almost direct comparison....

Can you wait a month or so?

The tinnier sound may soften a little with time (and carbon buildup). At least, the one on our BN2 did.

Thanks for the info..I certainly like the thought of it sitting higher under the frame. The old one is hammered to heck from hanging so low.
I'm gonna go with the stainless. You have convinced me.. Cheers.

I think the stainless is the way to go for longivity, but the tone on my BJ8 is a little mellow. This model has an extra silencer at the end and in my opinion, it is too quiet for a sportscar.

I have the MOSS stainless on my BN4 and it sounds good.

:yesnod: Beautiful car Rich, can't wait to see it complete. Don't rush it though, I'm sure you won't. Looks like the chassis is painted the same as the engine/transmission, what's the final color going to be?

BTW, does this mean you're going to have to crawl under there and polish it from time to time?

It's a matter of personal preference--and a quasi-religious topic--but I'd like to see Moss offer this system in mild steel, for three reasons:

1) cost
2) tone
3) cost

The way most of our cars are driven--relatively longer trips (I doubt if many of us fire up the Healey and let it warm up to make a quick trip to the 7-11 two blocks away, and how many drive on recently-salted roads?)--a mild steel system will last a long time because moisture will be evaporated. Most of our exhausts will get beaten-up going over steep driveways, speed bumps, etc. long before they will rust out. I still have portions of an Ansa mild steel exhaust that I've had for around 20 years and the metal is perfect (I've replaced the mufflers).

Besides being battered, most of the newer exhausts are some form of glass pack, and the packing will get blown out before the metal rusts through (SS won't help that).

So, a cheaper mild steel version with the same build quality would be great. Also--again, this is personal preference--if I was to buy one of these SS systems I'd scuff it and paint it with black high-temp coating anyway, so for me mild steel is the way to go.

Johnny,
Thanks. Color is Aston Martin California Sage green. It does look pretty close to the engine color. I'm sure I'll need to polish it.....

Hey Junkmanmitch,
I had a 1958 BN6 and when I restored it put on a mild steel system and was always very, very happy with the quality and exhaust note. Like Bob S said above, lot less to purchase the mild steel versus ss system and I know I have read someplace that many consider the exhaust note on mild carbon better than ss. In my case I swear by the mild carbon and nothing sounds like a Healey straight six- almost muscle car sounds. Plus, if you are trying to be as original, the entire system should be painted a flat black color so all the beautiful ss would have to be painted over. I recently purchased some new exhaust components for my 100M and they were polished ss so killed me scruffing them up to paint flat back.
Regards,
Mike

I confirm - I have installed BIG BORE SS exhaust and the note
sincerely is NOT the better to hear- old ALFA ROMEO have the better sound
