Exhaust stink in cockpit

I think the exhaust tip is too low and sticks out from under the car too far.

While you are the ususal suspect have you thought about maybe air from engine compartment coming in through the heater system.

Your stinking air may be transferring not from the exhaust but from under the hood and drafting through your heater intake, rusted heater box etc... vent door not closing. also check your cowl maybe an opening as appeared causing a draft from under the hood

I suspect the connection 'twixt the header and downpipe meself.

Doc, can that gasket go bad on it's own? The last time it was apart was 10 years ago or more.

They can suffer all sorts. Burn thru, loosening from vibration, whack from thumping a road FOD (Foreign Objects Damage) bit at the downpipe. It's been a "usual source" for cabin fumes in my experience.

Do you have a fresh air intake hose on your heater box?

Thanks all for the thoughts.

I don't have an intake hose for the heater box - (never had for the past 10 years) but the vent door is shut tight. Besides, its not a nice oily, hot engine smell - it is definitely exhaust gas and very unpleasant when it does waft in.

Let me do some calculation using that ad image to see about the proper height for the exhaust tip - I was told it was too high, now Jack is telling me it is too low.

I'll order up a gasket for the manifold/down-pipe connection - if nothing else to eliminate possibilities - I gotta get this fixed.

On that intake hose - has anyone tried clothes dryer hose from Home Depot - or is that just too tacky. Ha!

Cheers

dryer hose works well for me.....its what i have. nice thing about that is you can open the vent wide and draw in fresh air at your feet.

Instead of your shoes melting, wow.
I'll have to try it - thanks for posting. Have you sprayed it black? Did you move the horn? It seems to be in the way of the fresh air in my car.

BTW, Jack's right - according to calculations in PhotoShop, using the door height as reference, the exhaust tip is 3' below the bumper in that poster.
Mine was 4 1/4". I've raised to to 3 1/4" - we'll see.

Cheers!

Fresh air if you turn the heater off.......But opening it up might help break the cockpit bubble.

OK, raising the exhaust tip did squat but guess what! Good news - I think I've found the source.

I took off the carb etc to inspect the 2 lower nuts holding the clamps that hold the manifolds to the block. Loose as a goose!!

Bad news - they are totally inaccessible. Crows feet - no. 1/4" socket - no. Swivel socket - no.

I think I made a special tool last time (ie involving bits of metal, hack saw, vice, BFH). Or maybe it was a Made in Taiwan 9/16 wrench. Shows how long ago it was.

Anyways, rain has stopped play but I'll be back at it tomorrow. I'll try to just tighten up the manifold nuts and see if that works - if not I'll order up a new gasket (as well as a flange gasket, as per the Doc)

I'm stoked - maybe this exhaust leak from the manifold is causing my vapour lock misery.

Cheers!

good news! and, yes, there is a very good chance it will address the vapour lock misery too - did mine.

And remember th' Weasel Pee for penetrant on the rusty nuts 'n bolts!

Good news!

This is what the gasket looked like when I removed the manifolds:
Gasket.jpg

It appears the exhaust was leaking! Went ahead and replaced the gasket and no more exhaust stink in the cockpit!
R&R was a PITA - in the end I had to take a ring spanner, bang it flat, bang in a dog-leg and then grind a bunch of metal off.
Wrenches.jpg

Seems to me the only way to get at them long nuts:
LongNut.jpg

(Yeah, I need to order up a stud and proper clamp)

As I tightened up, the wrench needed additional bending to continue to engage the nut!

And then I had to modify another wrench for the other long nut!

Slight bad news: it still stinks when I open the quarter light but the remedy for that is easy.

Cheers!

Don't understand why you had such an issue with manifold nuts. No issue with standard wrenches or better yet ratcheting box wrenches in my toolbox. Took a little time on a couple of the bolts but no issue getting off or on.

Jim,

Sorry, I should have mentioned - this is the much hated 1500 engine.

Trust me - there is no other way of getting at those bottom two nuts - its why I believe the lower nuts (NLA) are like an inch or more long. If they were regular there would be NO way to get at them.

Cheers!

PS. You can see the wrench tightening one of these long nuts in the bottom photo.
