MGB Exhaust rubbing on steering column 77 MGB

Well, a lot of those header manifolds use a thin material where they bolt to the head. The original manifolds were cast iron and much thicker. On a stock MGB engine, the original cast iron manifold works very well and changing over to a header system has very little improvement in exhausting gasses, in fact hardly noticeable. If your engine is completely stock, you might be better off getting a stock manifold, their not that expensive and there's quite a few of them used out there, then put a stock exhaust system back on it and eliminate the problem. JMHO. PJ

Simon I also have the problem of the catilic converter rubbing on the sterring shaft' especliy when going down hill and using the engine to help control my speed.
I belive it it's due to a sagging engine mount on the left front. I have replaced the front engine mounts about two years ago and frankly I do not want to do it again. The mounting bolt that goes between the car abd the mount on the left frount is so close to the srering column that you cannot get to it and in order to turn it it means the complete removal of the srerring rack and pinnion, COMPLETE REMOVAL. I hope I can find enough slop in the attaching bolt holes that I can just loosen them and put some upward pressure to the engine and re tigetn the bolts.

UPDATE: Several issues all fixed. Changed out the manifold and went back to original. Cut off the aftermarket exhaust header and inserted original single pipe. She started first time, no noise, no smoke, plus the original pipe doesn't run on the steering column.

Now on to brakes & tires. Any suggestions for good tire choices for a 77?

Thanks for all the help getting me this far. Much appreciated.

Nice job sorting through the various issues.

As for tires, you'll get many opinions here. I'm running 175/70R14 in whatever brand the tire place had. They're perfectly functional and I've not noticed any performance issues. Other's here will probably chime in with different suggestions
