As I am putting together my large parts order for Tony I need some advice for my exhaust. My car came with a header on the 1275 and a hodge-podge of an exhaust pipe/muffler.

What pipe and muffler combination works as a bolt up to the 1275 with a header in a Bugeye?

I'd just have a local exhaust shop make up something and tell them you want a slip fit to the header so that you can easily pull the engine if needed.

I just did this a few weeks ago. First of all installing the header is difficult if the engine is still in the car, it probably requires removing the heater box. Next is the heatshield. It will require some hammer fitting to clear the header.

Once the header is in, I went to the local shop with my original pipe and had them bend a duplicate out of 1 3/4. I am running a RC 40 Muffler, which is a bit tight on the back of my BE, since it was designed for a Mini. I would think that a 1 3/4 Inlet and a 4" round free flow muffler would work for your application.

Lastely for the finishing touch, I had the muffler shop make an exaust tip, pointed down and away from my rear bumperette.

Do you have the cobbled exhaust that leads from that header through a stock muffler. I think that stock muffler is only 1.25".

Stick a straight pipe on the car and drive it to the muffler shop. If you get stopped by the police (which I doubt) you can tell them you are on your way there and they will most likely let you go or issue you a warning.

The stock muffler will be to small at 1 1/4 and require a reducer (the header is probably 1 1/2).

To get the full benefit of the header I would run the larger pipe and fit an aftermarket free flow muffler.

I found that a muffler (brand new) discarded by a Harley Davidson owner/friend fit perfectly with the header set-up, had a nice hanger-mount and a great sound. It's chrome and looks good too!

The muffler that I have was David Vizard's book. It was ordered from England many years ago. Based on David's tests it was determined to have the least back pressure and best sound of all that he had reviewed. The model number is RC40. I do not recall the vendor off hand.

I would think that any small (4" round or less) muffler with low back back pressure would work fine.

Mike, I like the hog idea, it never came to mind.

Just thought of a funny Hog story. Wife and I were out in the Bugeye near Battle Creek MI where I was the only military #2 guy at the USAF Cataloging Center.

Anyway it was a lovely day and we were enjoying it top down of course on a loansum country road when about a dozen Hogs went by with the usual Hog type folks riding with chicks behind, etc.

Up the road a bit they stoped and blocked the road, oh me problem. Lots of them and only me and wife. One comes up to the car and takes off his helmet and I knew him as he worked for me in the Center.

He said, just stopped so the guys could meet you and see your little car. Come on with us up the way and we'll buy the beer. Off we went, good time had by all. Great bunch of folks but surely had me worried for a bit.
