Exhaust Manifold Options

Move it towards the engine to reduce the noise. The longer tailpipe lets the pressure waves average out. In the early 70's fire engines ran straight pipes. The first installation of a large cherry bomb type muffler resulted in instant complaints that it was not loud enough. We slid a pipe of exhaust pipe about a quarter of the way into the muffler. Comments were it's a little better. By the time the fire fighters were happy the pipe was all the way through the muffler. In later installations we just skid the muffler over the existing pipe. The state law mandated the vehicle had to have a muffler. It did not say it had to work.
