Excessive exhaust smoke

Hi.....My car runs perfectly except sometimes when at idle, on a hill or side slope a huge amount of smoke comes out of the exhaust. Like a destroyer laying down a smoke screen. Applying gas and or moving the car up to speed clears the condition out and all is good again. Never experienced anything like this. Any ideas?? Thanks,Joe
 
My bet is it be white smoke from a leaking brake booster. But yes, a smoke color report would help narrow it down. :wink:
 
Black = overly rich/too much fuel
white = sucking brake fluid into the manifold via faulty brake booster
blue = burning oil by either getting past the piston rings and/or valve guides
 
The color was "Panic" but more to the point I'd say closer to white. Definitely not black. How do you check the brake booster? After this event happens my engine oil level drops considerably. It happend twice so far but I was thinking of trying to induce the happening tomorrow to see if I can track it down. Thanks, Joe

Unless there is a big puddle of oil under the car you must be burning it. My guess is that "panicked smoke" turns white but its actual colour is blue..
 
If the smoke has a very sweet smell, it's brake fluid from the booster. But since your oil is going down, I'd say that's where the problem is.

If I was a guessing man, and I'm guessing here as to whether my guess is a good guess, is :

Your rocker bushings are worn or your rocker banjo bolt has come undone and you have excess oil being pumped out the rocker and it is flooding under the rocker cover and leaking down the valve stems into your piston....

Banjo bolt and rocker bushings sound like the culprit. Brake fluid is fine soI don't think it's a salvo issue. Compression excellent so I doubt a rebore is needed. I'll take a look at the bushings as soon as a valve cover gasket arrives.....Thanks
 
An easy check is to remove the crankcase vent line from the rear carburetor and place it in a plastic oil bottle and then go drive the car. If it collects oil in bottle then it is most likely coming from rocker assembly. Either add more oil shield or rebuild the rocker train.

Sorry it took so long to reply. Sometimes when the rocker bushes are worn the hole on top sprays at the valve cover vent and the into the air filter. If the rear air filter is full of oil then that is most likely what is happening. I have made a deflector out of tin and attached it in a way to keep oil from spraying toward the vent (just to make sure that was the problem).

OK Alan....thanks for the info. I have the valve cover off as we speak and I'll be checking out the air cleaner as well. What did you attach the deflector to? This smoking only happens when the car is at an angled side slope or idleing on a hill.
