This kit contains only the every day taps and dies used on most autos. Most British cars use a combination of BSW and BSF threads, so normally, you'd need two tap and die kits, and you'd probably only use a few of the sizes. With this kit, you get a mix of both - BSW & BSF, but only the ones used on cars. Gone is the expensive box, instead taps and dies are preserved in their own individual plastic container. This makes storage in your toolbox drawer easy, and the boxes are also marked with the sizes, 1/4", 5/16" & 3/8", BSW & BSF taps in taper and bottom form. Dies are also in the same sizes. Of course, if you ever need an oddball sized tap or die, we can always supply it individually.

This may have come at a good time. I just bought a replacement Shifter knob for my 77 MGB, only to find that the DPO had stripped the shaft. I only know the basics of die and tap work, so my question would be that if I used a set like this would it remove so much metal that my knob wouldn't fit now?

you might be able to solve this with taps and dies and you might not. If you have stripped the thread on the shaft then the die would leave you with a smaller width thread, and no, the knob wouldn't fit anymore.

The first alternative is to then re-thread the hole in the bottom of the knob to match the new thread on the end of the shifter.

The other alternative is to use a die and cut a fairly coarse thread on the end of the shifter. You would then need to get some "fast steel". Our parent company sells it at www.caswellplating.com. It is $5.50. Apply some form of lubricant to the end of the shifter that you just re-threaded. Vaseline should be fine. Apply the "fast steel" into the hole in the bottom of the knob and push the knob onto the shifter while turning it clockwise.

The fast steel will adhere to the new coarse threads very well. You may have to quickly wipe off any fast steel that oozes out of the knob as you push and turn it onto the shifter.

Third option. Find a new shifter.

This is probably a dumb question but how much difference is there between just standard fine thread taps (like you might buy at Auto Zone) and BSF?
 
Dave is right, there is a 2 thread difference between the two until you get to larger sizes where the thread count differences can be greater. Also, with UNF, the thread count remains at 12 threads per inch for every size at 1 inch and larger. With BSF, the thread count decreases continually as diameter increases. A 3" BSF tap for example has only 5 threads per inch.

However,the real difference is the pitch!
1/4" BSF for example is .03850 where as 1/4" UNF is .036
Not much of difference at this size perhaps but look what happens when you get to a larger size
5/8" BSF is .07140 where as 5/8" UNF is .056.
So, in smaller sizes BSF and UNF are mildly similar but not compatible.
Not only this but the depth of the threads are deeper in BSF than they are in UNF, also making them quite different!
 
I just bought this set. I'm restoring a '53 MGTD. I'm using the tap and dies primaraly to clean up the threads on old hardware. Its been a great resource. I have since gone back and bought 7/16" and 1/2" sizes too.
I've been searching for a long time for a source for BSF hardware and tools. This was a great find for me.
