Niiiice.

Time to clean out some carbs, methinks! Start with a can of spray carb cleaner & get all inside & outside to clean them out/off as best as possible...see if that makes thinghs better - might save taking them off.

Lookin' at th' "fuzz" on them needles I'd say the only thing to do ~IS~ take 'em off. A three-day soak in a bucket of carb cleaner and a call to Joe on the To-Do list. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

If I gotta take 'em off I will. So far looks not that bad under the gunk. Trying not to take a run over to Joe C's but if I gotta, I gotta.

It only costs a few bucks & some time to spray carb cleaner inside them...you can remove the dash pot to get all down inside them...then, if they still don't work, you'll know you at least tried everything first.

Should I shoot it unto the small hole -seat? that leads down into the bowl? These bowls are not as easy to remove as the ones on my 67.

You're probably gonna end up having to do what Doc says & pull them....but, were it me, I'd yank the dashpots & spray carb cleaner everywhere inside & outside them first....then, if they still don't work correctly at least they'll be clean when you remove them.

Squirt it everywhere!

Yep, now spray car cleaner all down in there & show us another photo!!

I sprayed it down into the hole and light brown liquid schtuff came out. The pics were taken after I sprayed it. I'm going to let them soak overnight & spray them again in the AM.

Well, if thaat came out - Doc's right....

It's not big deal to take them off & clean them out. I have another set off the GT. I'll have to see if they are any better.

Rear one looks as if it'd take blasting powder to get all the schmaze outta that jet tube. I'd be for benchin' the pair of 'em and goin' right thru 'em. That's the only way to be sure they're right. They've sat too long. "Rode hard, put away wet."

Other than carbcleaner that gets kinda spensive by the can, is there a gallon cleaner I can buy that anyone can recommend?

Gallon cleaner is available from Gunk and Berryman at places like Advance Auto. The gallon cans have strainer buckets on the inside so you don't loose small parts. I prefer the "smell" of Gunk but both products work well.

I'm about to repeat a recommendation I've given on other threads. Purists take note that I am starting with a warning.

Buy pipe cleaners. Carefully (and I mean carefully) inspect the cut ends of the pipe cleaners and file away any sharp metal burrs on the cut, twisted wire ends. Make sure you wouldn't be afraid to drag the thing over your skin. No sharp edges, none.

Once you've confirmed you have a safe pipe cleaner, spray the hole in the jet tube as you've done and give it a few minutes to soak. Then spray the pipe cleaner and gently work it up and down in the jet tube. Gently, gently. Your task is to remove the goo without scratching anything.

Use the carb cleaner on the needles along with some VERY fine ScotchBrite. Repeat, very fine. Again, you're object is to clean without scratching.

If you're careful you'll clean out/off all the deposits and can put the carbs back into operation without changing the jet adjustments and therefore you avoid having to re-tune. On the other hand, if you've already changed the jet settings just soak the parts and skip all the pipe cleaner and ScotchBrite stuff.

I've only worked with my HS-4's so the HIF-4's are new to me. I was hoping to not change any settings. I have some 4-0 steel wool that I'll use on the needles. It very soft.
