So my buddy that owns a BMW Repair shop (fixes all kinds of stuff) gave me a call before lunch and told me I needed to get down there around 12:00. When I showed up, he had just finished installing a new head gasket on an honest to goodness "authentic" D-Type Jaguar. This one is s/n 47 which means it is a "post fire" car but still worth a small fortune. He popped off the passenger side cover and told me to hop in. We went out for about 15 minutes through some twistys followed by a high-speed pass down the highway. I really don't know how to describe the feelings I was experiencing but I will say, I doubt I will ever forget it. The sounds of the open pipes combined with the lack of wind protection on my side and the utter feeling of no control left me absolutely speechless. As a matter of fact, when we pulled back into the shop, I had to stay seated in the car for a little while to avoid embarrassing myself. Kind of tough getting back to work now.
Forgot to add: One of the coolest things about this Jag is the owner DRIVES it. It looks stellar and exceptionally clean but certainly not a museum restoration. While I do enjoy going to car shows and viewing over the top restos, I'm always the most impressed by cars like this that are actually driven and enjoyed. I cannot remember if it was Lenno or Reggie Jackson that said "I'm only renting these cars so I might as well enjoy them while they're mine". My feelings exactly.
