how the internet slows down in the evening. Boy the whole would must be on line.

Sometimes this site slows when its crunching on the log files for the statistics. It usually only lasts a little while when it happens though.

When cable and DSL were emerging, DSL providers were quick to point out that home cable users shared their bandwidth with the neighbors (like a local area network). If there was only one person using the network, they would have full speed access, lets just say 5Mbps. If you have 20 people, streaming video or loading photographs, theoretically everyone would be downloading @ 250Kbps. These are just made up numbers, and everyone would have to be loading web pages at the same time (not just reading a loaded page), but you get the idea. So cable has a tendency to slow in the evening when more folks are home.

I remember the Pacific Bell commercials about that. They were a spoof on gang violence and bad neighborhoods, only it was cops patrolling middle to upper class neighborhoods watching the neighbors waring over bandwidth hogging. They were hilarious!

just a side note, this site was very slow over the past 30 minutes for me. Extremely slow actually.

Now I’ve been experiencing slow downs and not due to the reasons I posted above. It seems to be the “Forum List” page. 4:30 AM PCT I’m getting page generations around 61 to 73 seconds, last evening I had a 131 sec load time. Once I’m in a forum, the pages load in 2 seconds or less. Seems to have started for me with the software upgrade, but that could be a coincidence.

Something is going on to slow things down. I'm investigating to see if I can figure it out. I know that one of the stats programs "analog" seems to be running whenever it slows down, but I'm not sure that's the whole problem. There is a slight possibilty we are experiencing a DOS attack . I'm checking on it.

Ahhh, understand. Thought it was me and I hate to complain. In fact I will not. I will comment only. I love this place.

Thanks! We've done some tweaking that should improve things. Let me know if it seems better now.

It's a lot better then it was earlier today. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Yep yep, all normal now.

Hi Basil,
What ever you tweaked had a major impact in response times. Page generations are .02 seconds now, give or take a couple thou. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif Thanks.

A dos attack is a very good posibility! Although years back {1996} I was running an I.R.C. channel on the DalNet server when the dos attacks began there. They were pretty much 7/24`s with no letup. They pestered us so badly we finally had to move to another I.R.C. network and server. Then in the end I moved completely off and gave my channel up. If it is a dos attack here, it looks like someone with a personal vendetta and free time around the same time frame every evening. In the case of the DalNet dos attackers they were looking to take over the whole network. I hope the same doesn`t happen here.
