Engine-Transmission Mating

I bought a dowel bolt from Aircraft Supply. $8 delivered.

I am now trying to mate my engine and transmission. I have used the clutch alignment tool and am comfortable that the splines are properly aligned. My engine is on a mobile engine stand. I've strapped my transmission to my rolling floor jack. There is some wiggle with the angle here so I can actually adjust it a little.

Theoretically I should be able to lift the transmission into a rough alignment and then lift the tail while pushing them together. The only video I've seen on this has been on the smaller 4-cylinder engines or lighter transmissions without overdrive. My transmission/overdrive is HEAVY! I can lift it, but don't want to kill my back doing this.

What voodoo have people used?

Chris, I usually put the engine on the floor, resting on the oil pan / cardboard. Engine hoist or friends to muscle the gearbox on. Less likely to have gravity step in and make a mess.
 
One tip I saw on another forum was to purchase a couple long bolts with threads to match the ones connecting the bell housing to the engine. Cut the heads of the bolts off, thread the shanks into two of the upper bolt holes on the engine, and use them to support / guide the transmission on. I plan to do that next time I'm in your situation.

I love this idea. I'll give it a try. Obviously not to pull it together though.
