engine/tranny install

Hi , as the title says , I am busy painting my wifes mk2 Midget just now and will be putting it back together soon . What is the consensus re installing the engine / transmission ? should they go is as one item or box first then engine ? The car was in a million bits when I got it so I do not know how it came out . ( its the standard 1098 if that makes any difference) . We have never even driven one of these cars so it should be interesting when done.

Thanks Jeff , I will do it that way . The front end is off the car anyway so that will help re angles etc . How easy is it to line up the prop after install? It seems to just slide into the box and is splined ? seems an odd way of doing things , my TR6 & XJS are bolted with flanges both ends. Thanks Scott

I would install it with the prop shaft already slipped on, then it is a simple matter to mate it up to the rear end.

If you inserr the driveshaft into the trans and tie it in place with an easily cut loop of wire through the U-joint and shifter, it will not slide out during the installation and dump trans oil all over. Once in, reach through the shifter hole in the tunnel and cut away the wire. Definitely the easiest way to re-install the motor/trans/driveshaft.

Here is yet another technique. This one is more useful with two people (though one can do it) and you MUST exercise some degree of caution -- see below.

1. As always, drain trans oil to prevent the mess in the tunnel as the driveshaft disengages.
2. Pull engine and trans as a unit leaving driveshaft connected to the differential and obviously laying in the tunnel.
3. Upon reinstallation as a unit, start the rear of the trans into the tunnel stopping as the rear of the trans comes into view through the shifter opening in the tunnel.
4. Here is where the caution comes in! Reach into the shifter access hole and slip the driveshaft back into the trans just enough to prevent it from falling back out. The engine/trans unit will have to be moved slightly (and I stress slightly) to the rear while one is holding the driveshaft. Any large unexpected movement of the engine/trans could result in quite a cussing session!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif No, I haven't yet learned this the hard way!
5. Continue your installation and of course as always, do not forget to refill the trans with oil.

Many thanks , that looks the way forward - better prepare her ladyship that she is going to get oily again /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

I would suggest adding the tranny oil AFTER installation...Much less likely to have puddle issues!!!

Can also with the drive shaft unbolted tape the front universal straight then just stick it in and bolt up. The first time you drive the tape will come off.
