Engine Side Cover Plate Oil Leak

Hi Guys,

I have a slight oil leak that I have traced to the bolt that holds the center engine cover plate.

I have tightened the bolt and it does have a washer, so not sure why it's leaking?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I guess I could try a new washer? Should I use a bit of gasket seal also? The washer I have is a "hard" washer. Is there a fiber type washer also needed?

Thanks!
Bob

Try a copper crush washer and do not overtighten the bolt as it distorts the plate.

Hey Bob,
I also used a hylomar type gasket sealant and pretty much took care of any leaks.

Mike

Hey Mike,

Is this the stuff from Moss? Why is hylomar better than the basic Permatex non harding stuff? I always wanted to know, but was afraid to ask....

Also, do you just apply to both sides of the washer than tighten? Seems like it would squish out?

Thanks for your advice.
Bob

In theory, all you really need is a NEW copper washer. Once used it is scored and that is where the oil gets out. A little (very little)Hylomar doesn't hurt. What ever you use the important thing is not to tighten a too much. This area, like the valve cover, is not under engine pressure. no need for strong arm force. You risk distorting the edge of the covers and then you will leak.

If the new copper gasket does not work, Moss sells a cupped washer and rubber O-ring that works excellent. I give it my highest recommendation. You can find it in their catalogue as an alternative part

You can use an old copper washer. If it is cupped, tap it flat with a hammer. The trick is to use a little silicone sealant under the copper washer so it seals around the bolt and hole - and do not overtighten it. As for that hylomar, I recently tried the racing version of the stuff and all it makes is a mess.

Richard--

I also found Hylomar to be messy until I learned to use it very sparingly. I think the stuff is awesome.

BTW Stat-O-Seal washers provide great seals around bolt-holes that are securing tappet covers and the like.

....but dripping oil is all part of the British car experience :yesnod:

Hey Bob,
You've got a lot of good advice since I last logged on. As to the hylomar versus permatex products, that just seems to be the most recommended brand to use. Roger Moment had a great article about it in a recent issue of the AHCUSA mag and he does mention which one to use. Believe it is the one Moss sells. Wish I could tell you why but not without finding my copy and I'm not at home today. Think main thing is to use it sparingly and as all say, do not over tighten the bolts.
Good luck,
Mike

Hey Guys!

Thanks again for all of your good advice & suggestions! I really appreciate it. I think I will buy some Hylomar for future use and go ahead and get the cupped o-ring and washer setup from Moss.

Regards,
Bob
