TR2/3/3A Engine shakes as it is accelerated.

Thank you.

I did learn a good bit during this exercise.

I left the TR3B overnight and just for a test I started it on the handle this afternoon. It fired up second 1/4 turn.

Not to be funny, but I think I would have warmed it up good and did a good compression test dry and wet early on to rule out valves seating poorly. Just to have that info for sure. Any time I hear poor pulses and lack of smoothness till higher rpm’s I always want to know what the cylinders are capable of before I get into spark, timing etc. Even crappy valve seats from setting will cause some symptoms like you first described. Good pick up on the timing issues.
I hope you got all the bugs out.

The owner of the TR3B ordered a new distributer from TRF. I fitted it and timed everything up. The timing advance works as advertised but when checking the points gap I noticed the points were a bit sticky. Took the new points off the new distributer and they were definitely stiff. So I applied a bit of light oil to the pivot (the points are the all in one set) and they seemed better.
I have been off the car for a few days. Today I started it to complete the timing settings and go for a run in it. It was hard to start and ran like C**p. Checked that I had all the plug caps on properly, checked the timing, checked there was fuel in both bowls and finally checked the points again. They were so sticky that I could open them and sometimes they did not close.
Replaced the points with my spare set and it fired right up and ran great.

New parts are not always good parts.

Glad you figured that out. Are the new distributors like the original ones with the knurled nut for advancement and the old cap?

The new distributers are like the old ones in that they have the knurled A/R knob but unlike the old ones when it comes to points. Thet have the all in one points setup not the pivot pin on the A/R plate type.
They come in a nice green Lucas box straight from the far east.
