Engine Serial number

Hello all, my first post here. I just purchased a 1979 MG Midget 1500 from the original owner in California. The car was purchased new in San Diego and never left the state, so the body is extremely nice with a few door dings received over its life.

Prior to the purchase a lot of pics and email was exchanged (I drove from Colorado to trailer it back), and a promise of the original window sticker. Well, on my arrival, no window sticker, so I was a bit disappointed, but was not going to drive back empty handed.

Yesterday in the mail was a thick package from the owner with the all his receipts and the original window sticker (I'm happy now!). Matching up the serial numbers on the window sticker shows an engine serial number of -0068401- which I'm not able to find on the engine. The only number that resembles close to a serial is -FP68537UCE- which is stamped on the left rear side of the block. Could the serial be any other place?

My assumption is the engine has been replaced. Do you guys agree?

Dave

Well, the FP68537UCE number is certainly in line with a '79 California emissions engine number. There may have been an error in the paperwork somewhere.
The only place I know to find the engine number is exactly where you found it.
You could also contact the British Motor Heritage, and get a Heritage Certificate for the car. That should indicate the engine number that was installed at the factory.

Look on the passenger side of the block right around the #3 spark plug where the cylinder head meets the engine block...there should be a little aluminum tag that's held in place by 2 round rivets...number shopuld start with 18V.....

guess tony has "B's" on da brain. mayB we could bring back the B thread for him??

Well, heck! There is a BBS for those little ba$tard$ ins't there?

Thanks. I did email the previous owner asking him about the engine, but have not heard anything.

One interesting thing on the sticker is the estimated fuel costs are based on .70/gallon!!! Ahhh the good old days.

Dave

*sniffle* $0.70/gallon sucks to be able to remember that far back....
