engine running for the first time, but problem.

Well, thanks for the thoughts and good advice everyone. I didn't replace the studs. They looked fine and there seems to be mixed opinion on this. I guess to be on the safe side. . . The oil seems to be bubbling slightly through the edge of the gasket which seems to indicate that there is some compression involved. It's odd that it's all the way along. I take your point about no oil pressure on the push rod side of the engine. That's what makes me wonder. At the moment I'm running water in the cooling system so I can drain all the rebuild contaminants out of the system before I put coolant in. I'm not sure really, whether the leak is oil or coolant. I have noticed (I think) a very small oil slick on the top of the water in the radiator. I just hope it's not the dreaded porous block.
I contacted A H Spares in the UK. I buy most of my stuff from them and have always been happy. They make a premium gasket that they say is better than original and they have had other customers with this problem. The premium gasket has fixed it. Makes me wonder why they sell the other gasket if it causes problems. Anyway, it looks like the head will come off! Don't know if I'll replace the studs. I'm tempted to, just to be on the safe side.

3/8 generator pulley for 1965 BJ8

Put a 1/2" pulley on it keep the 3/8" belt and it will charge much better at Idle :applause:

I checked the ARP site. It seems they only have crank studs listed for the Healey 6. I'd give them a call anyway. ARP studs are the best.
ARP definitely has the head studs. Moss sells them, but I bought mine directly from ARP before Moss got in the action. Oddly, ARP is on the way when I used to drive up to Moss.

Thanks again everyone for all they advice.
I contacted ARP. They don't keep Healey head studs. They are available from the UK. DW makes them and also sold by A H Spares. The heavy duty studs are pretty expensive. I'm not sure I need them really so I might just replace them with standard studs. It's only a road car. I started to strip the engine tonight, so we'll see what lurks beneath. If you are interested you can see the problem here:

Might have to paste it into your browser.
