Well, thanks for the thoughts and good advice everyone. I didn't replace the studs. They looked fine and there seems to be mixed opinion on this. I guess to be on the safe side. . . The oil seems to be bubbling slightly through the edge of the gasket which seems to indicate that there is some compression involved. It's odd that it's all the way along. I take your point about no oil pressure on the push rod side of the engine. That's what makes me wonder. At the moment I'm running water in the cooling system so I can drain all the rebuild contaminants out of the system before I put coolant in. I'm not sure really, whether the leak is oil or coolant. I have noticed (I think) a very small oil slick on the top of the water in the radiator. I just hope it's not the dreaded porous block.
I contacted A H Spares in the UK. I buy most of my stuff from them and have always been happy. They make a premium gasket that they say is better than original and they have had other customers with this problem. The premium gasket has fixed it. Makes me wonder why they sell the other gasket if it causes problems. Anyway, it looks like the head will come off! Don't know if I'll replace the studs. I'm tempted to, just to be on the safe side.
